Library Specialist, Conservation

The Library Specialist performs a wide range of straightforward to complex physical treatments and repairs on the Library’s print resources with a high degree of skill and independent judgement. This position assists with the workflow management of materials, including prioritizing materials for attention and tracking items during treatment. This position assists with emergency preparation and response and contributes to conservation outreach. This position is located at the Library’s offsite facility.

Required Education and Experience:
·     Bachelor’s Degree
·     Formal training in a book conservation setting
·     3 years of experience performing conservation treatments in a library or comparable environment
OR
·     High School Diploma or Equivalent
·     Formal training in a book conservation setting
·     9 years of experience performing conservation treatments in a library or comparable environment
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:
·     Hand skills in and knowledge of book conservation, binding techniques, and the creation of custom protective enclosures demonstrated through a portfolio or examples
·     Specialized knowledge of book structures, historical methods of book production and printing, binding techniques, paper repair, and conservation practices
·     Strong proficiency with record-keeping
·     Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Box, Teams, and Excel
·     Ability to demonstrate proper care and handling of library materials
·     Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
·     Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
·     Proficiency with written and spoken English
·     Excellent communication skills
·     Proficiency with written and spoken English
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
·     Experience in a library environment
·     Experience with navigating bibliographic information
·     Familiarity with leather conservation techniques
·     Familiarity with social media engagement and outreach
