Montgomery County Government Climate Year-long Fellowship (Hybrid) – Starting June 2023

About the Fellowship

Montgomery County, Maryland, has been committed to significant greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and climate action for over a decade. Through the 2017 Emergency Climate Mobilization Resolution, Montgomery County committed to cut GHG emissions 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035. In 2021, the County released a Climate Action Plan detailing the effects of a changing climate on Montgomery County and includes strategies to reduce GHG emissions and climate-related risks to the County’s residents, businesses, and the built and natural environment. More information about the County’s Climate Action Plan is available at: https://MontgomeryCountyMD.gov/Climate 
Montgomery County is seeking climate fellows to join the County’s climate team. This is a competitive year-long, full-time fellowship for qualified students and recent graduates with diverse backgrounds who have strong experience, education, or interest, in climate, sustainability, racial equity, and clean and renewable energy policy.

This is a paid fellowship ($20/hour) at 40 hours per week. The fellowship will be conducted almost entirely remotely (teleworking), with the option to come into the office in Wheaton, MD, and to join community events. Preference to candidates from Montgomery County, MD, or the surrounding area. Fellows will be on-boarded and paid through a temporary services agency and will be detailed to the County for the fellowship duration.  

The fellows will collaborate with County employees on projects on diverse climate and energy issues, such as: 

  • Climate change, resilience, and energy efficiency policy 
  • Community engagement programs and planning
  • Digital communications for climate action/resilience planning, including through generating strategy and content for social media, ArcGIS Story Maps, and County-wide newsletters
The fellows will work closely with County employees to gain experience by attending meetings and briefings, conducting research, writing summaries, etc. County employees will also work with the fellows to assign projects that will increase their knowledge of energy and climate issues while supporting their strengths and interests.  
Successful fellows will possess the following qualities and skills: 
  • Strong academic and/or volunteer/work experience in climate and energy policy and sustainability and a strong interest in and learning more about these fields 
  • Individuals in other fields (e.g., marketing/communications, art/design, public health, economics, sociology, social work, geography, English, creative writing, history, biology) who are excited to make linkages to climate/energy/sustainability are also welcome to apply. 
  • Commitment to centering racial equity and social justice in climate action 
  • Enthusiasm for the process of finding solutions to climate and energy challenges 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Independent and self-motivated worker; eager to ask questions 
  • Diligence in research and high attention to detail 
  • Values high-quality work and the importance of deadlines
