Wildfire Data Science (REMOTE)

Internship Description: Efficient Wildfire Streaming Backend Development using Satellite Data

*Internship will be half-time through May and then full-time for summer

Objectives of the Internship: The objective of this internship program is to develop a highly efficient wildfire streaming backend using satellite data to improve real-time visualization of wildfire incidents. The ultimate goal of the project is to help authorities and first responders make better-informed decisions by providing them with accurate, up-to-date information on the location and extent of wildfires, as well as their potential impact on nearby communities. By completing this internship, the intern will gain hands-on experience in developing scalable, real-time data streaming solutions and gain valuable skills in geospatial data analysis and visualization.

Tasks to be Accomplished: The intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Design and develop a streaming pipeline for satellite data processing
  • Implement algorithms to identify events and build visualization functionalities surrounding individual wildfire events
  • Optimize the pipeline for scalability and efficiency
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to integrate the backend into a web-based dashboard
  • Test and evaluate the system for accuracy and performance

Project Deliverables: By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to deliver the following:

  • A functioning wildfire streaming backend that can process satellite data and provide real-time updates on wildfire progression
  • An optimized pipeline that can handle large volumes of data and is scalable
  • A report summarizing the work done, including technical details, challenges faced, and recommendations for future improvements

Desired Skill Set: The ideal candidate for this internship should possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills in Python and experience with geospatial libraries such as GDAL, Dask, STAC, and geospatial database Postgres/Post-GIS.
  • Familiarity with satellite data processing and image analysis techniques
  • Experience with data streaming technologies and backend development such as Apache Kafka
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work as an individual and in a multidisciplinary team environment
