Teacher Institute Internship, Summer 2023

The Teacher Institute Intern will work within the Education Division to provide administrative and programmatic support for Preparing for America at 250: Women and the American Revolution, an in-person summer institute for K-12 Teachers hosted by the New-York Historical Society (N-YHS). This intern will report to the Manager of Education Special Projects and work closely with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, the Vice President for Education, and other members of the Institute team, which will provide an introduction to museum education and program development. They will also gain experience in the “behind the scenes” administrative work that helps teacher institutes and museum educational programs run.

The primary duties of this intern will be to assist in logistical arrangements for the two-week program, provide administrative support for its sessions, and assist in its day-to-day running. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to attend institute sessions, featuring historian lectures, film screenings, field trips, and gallery tours, and to observe other education programs.
After the institute, the intern will shift to developing materials for the online curriculum guide Women and the American Story (WAMS). This will provide the intern with experience working with primary and secondary sources, curriculum development, program design and implementation, as well as basic website maintenance skills.
The schedule for this internship is informed by the institute. The ideal candidate will be able to work in-person full-time during all ten days of the in-person institute: July 10 to July 21 (Mon-Fri). During non-institute weeks, the intern will work for a total of 13 hours, and the schedule will be worked out between the intern and Manager of Special Projects with the following requirements: the intern must be available for a virtual meeting on Wednesdays and an in-person gathering on Fridays. Qualified candidates will possess strong organizational, task management, and communication skills; the ability to work independently; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of American History; a willingness to learn; and a commitment to the value of education.
