Job Description: The Candidate will be exposed to numerous immigration issues such as assisting in family unification, obtaining green cards, visas and temporary work permits for professionals, students, international executives and managers, business persons who wish to work in the U.S., Canadian NAFTA applicants, investors, scholars and researchers, health care professionals, spouses of US citizens, their children, parents, and other family members. The work may also involve helping immigrants avoid deportation and assisting asylum applicants and those fleeing persecution. The Candidate will have exposure to our immigration system, both in the U.S. as well as to U.S. consulates overseas and their procedures as they deal with applicants for visas, etc. The assistant will help in the preparation and filing of visa petitions, dealing with several government agencies, and will work closely with senior legal assistants and attorneys in all aspects of legal representations. Candidate will have client exposure, obtain facts from clients, and follow up with and update clients. The position requires the extensive use of computer systems, preparation of exhibits for clients’ applications, and researching issues when applicable. The Candidate will help collect data from potential clients through phone contacts and follow-ups, and may also help in web-based research and contacts. The Candidate must be willing to help with traditional secretarial tasks such as typing, filings, errands, copying, drafting letters, handling phone calls and client intake calls.
 
Job Qualifications: This position is appropriate for college graduates with excellent writing ability who are interested in the field of immigration, public policy, government actions, administrative law, or the general field of law. We accept applications from those who desire to go to law school in the future as well as from those who wish to become career paralegals through experience. We require a four-year college degree with cumulative GPA of at least 3.3. Must be passionate about the field of immigration, about immigrants’ rights, and must believe in the value of immigration to America. No specific experience in immigration is necessary. However, the candidate is expected to be a people person who enjoys interacting with diverse individuals and should have exceptional communication and writing skills. While the goal is to help attorneys and senior legal assistants in immigration legal matters, the candidate must also be willing to help with extensive secretarial tasks such as typing, answering phones, forms preparation, copying, filing, errands and any clerical or administrative task needed.  
 
Compensation and Benefits: This is an entry level, hourly position, with an hourly rate commensurate with qualifications, with possible overtime.
