Library Circulation Specialist

Job Summary
These positions provide advanced support work in the General Library System and in coordination with the head librarian of each location is responsible for the day to day operations of the library. These positions also support overseeing the security and general functioning of the library, responding to security and emergency situations and supporting circulation services, and exercising good judgment in the application of policies and procedures.

There are 3 positions available in Public Services units at the UW-Madison Libraries.
1. Social Work and Business Library (1 position)
2. Evening and Weekend Circulation at Memorial Library (2 positions)

One position will work in both the Business Library and Social Work Library, providing advanced support to faculty, students, staff and other patrons. They will also provide other support such as supporting reserves and other services and directing student work. This position is onsite and will work regular business hours Monday through Friday. Travel between the two libraries may be required.

Two positions are available in Memorial Library, providing advanced support to faculty, staff, students and other patrons during the evenings and weekends. These positions will direct student work, manage circulation services and assist with security and the general functioning of the library. These positions are evening and weekend positions. Please see the Schedule Requirement section for specific hours for each position. Evening and weekend differentials will apply to this position. These positions will have the option to work remotely up to 16 hours per week based on the schedule set by the supervisor.

Responsibilities
Performs a wide range of complex library services which support the day-to-day operations to provide access to information resources in a variety of formats. Hires, trains, and guides student employees.
  • 10% Provides complex support to the day-to-day operations of library services to provide guidance in the use of library information resources, operations, and policies; or to acquire, prepare, and preserve library information resources for use
  • 10% May assist and educate both face-to-face and remote customers in the use of technologies and tools to create, seek, use, and manage information
  • 5% Interprets policies and procedures to answer non-routine questions and resolve complex issues
  • 5% Utilizes designated library systems, tools, standards, and practices to locate, retrieve, and organize; or describe, edit, preserve, and reformat a variety of library information resources
  • 10% Conducts reference searches to locate relevant materials and answer questions as needed
  • 10% Utilizes library software and systems to retrieve, enter, and report on data using a wide variety of applications
  • 10% Provides complex library services support in absence of a supervisory authority. Acts as a resource to other library staff
  • 15% Hires, trains, and guides student employees and monitors student workflows
  • 5% Contributes to the development of policies and procedures
  • 5% Participates in committee work within the library and the university
  • 15% Security: Ensure a safe and secure environment for the Library's patrons, staff, collections
  • and contents.

Education
High School Diploma is Required

Qualifications
Physical Requirements:
-Ability to occasionally lift 50 pounds with or without an accommodation
-Ability to work on a computer for 6+ hours with or without an accommodation
-Ability to move around a large building or a separate location with or without an accommodation

Preferred Skills:
-Experience working in a library setting
-Experience with or knowledge of circulation functions (checkout, return, recall, hold, etc.)
-Experience overseeing or directing the work of others
-Experience in planning, developing, and application of policies and procedures
-Ability to work independently and with a team
-Ability to be flexible, pay close attention to detail and respond well to multiple competing demands
-Ability to analyze problems and suggest solutions

Work Schedule and Work Type
Evening//Weekend Student Supervisor positions:
-Position A schedule: Sunday-Thursday: 2:30 - 11:30pm during semester (flexibility during interims)

-Position B schedule: Tuesday - Saturday: Tu-Thurs; 2:30-11:30pm & Fri - Sat: 12:30-9:30pm (flexibility during interims)

-Both of these positions have the option to work remotely up to 16 hours per week (40%).

Business/Social Work Circulation Specialist position
-This position is onsite only and will have standard business hours (M-F)

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
