Navigation Specialist

About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: Compass Family Resource Center offers trauma-informed services to families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Families can access immediate crisis support and get connected with resource referrals, case management, groups and classes, and support with job searches.

Salary: $24-$29 per hour

Schedule: Monday - Friday during standard business hours

Work location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. This is a fully in-person role.

What the Case Manager / Resource Specialist will do:
This position is split 50/50 between two types of work:

  • As a case manager, they meet with families on a weekly basis for several months. During this time, they advocate for and support families in meeting their goals and addressing barriers to stability. 

  • As a resource specialist, they make sure that every family at the Family Resource Center receives up-to-date information about the resources available to them in the community.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Provide family-focused case management services to families including program enrollment, assessment, goal setting, advocacy and referrals.
  • Stay up-to-date on resources available to families in the community. Share information through one-on-one conversations, physical and virtual resource boards, email communication.
  • Follow up with clients and providers after making referrals to encourage progress and document use/success.
  • Provide drop-in counseling and crisis intervention to clients coming to the FRC.
  • Assist with activities such as childcare, donations, coverage of front desk and support with community activities, groups and workshops.


The Case Manager / Resource Specialist should have these skills and experiences:
  • Ability to connect meaningfully with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Understanding of homelessness, including causes, challenges faced by homeless families, and available resources in the Bay Area.
  • Outstanding work habits: punctuality, communication, reliability, cooperation, organization, professionalism. Ability to work independently and to juggle many responsibilities concurrently.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite of Programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.). Salesforce experience is a plus.

Location and Covid safety:
  • Work location: 37 Grove St, San Francisco. Not a hybrid/remote role.
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
  • Covid precautions in the workplace: required masking, air filtration, sanitizing

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Salary range: $24 - $29 based on experience and education
  • Paid time off: 19 days of vacation your first year, 24 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, time off for education, family leave.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.
