About the Position:
Under the general direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer in Advance Planning, the Research Data Specialist II (RDS II) is a team member at full journey person level and has primary responsibility in the Division of Transportation Planning for a variety of tasks associated with the application of travel demand modeling, transportation data, statistical analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for various Caltrans transportation engineering, project development, and planning needs. This is a technical planning position that requires the incumbent to determine the scope and parameters of research criteria and perform complex research work. The RDS II will collaborate closely with Traffic Operations on the development of planning and project studies and related data collection efforts. The RDS II also works cooperatively with internal and external partners including the Regional Transportation Planning Agencies and Metropolitan Planning Organization on planning studies and related projects to support the Department's mission, goals, and objectives.  

The RDS II may be assigned by Supervisor to be a Lead-worker to train, direct, and manage the work of other staff within assigned branch.
 
What You'll Do:
  • In support of the 40.50 program - Project Initiation Document: Provides Travel Demand Modeling and Forecasting support services, using advanced mathematical, statistical, and travel demand modeling methods for Capital Outlay Support (COS) projects including project specific modeling of alternatives and travel forecasts; performance measures such as Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT), Delay, and Travel Time; Traffic Indices and Design Designations. Initiates service requests, as necessary, for on-call consultant support for Travel Demand Modeling and Forecasting as well as macro and micro simulation in coordination with Traffic Operations. Collaborates closely with district Traffic Operations on the development of planning and project studies and related data collection efforts to ensure continuity and consistency with subsequent project studies. Coordinates District travel forecast activity with Regional Transportation Planning Agencies' (RTPA) and Metropolitan Planning Organizations' (MPO) regional travel forecast models. Provides project oversight as primary Caltrans travel forecast model representative with RTPA and MPO staff. Develops and maintains District expertise for the use and application of state of the practice tools for travel modeling and forecasting. Participates on RTPA/MPO, HQ and Central Coast Travel Forecast Model Committees.
  • Participates in internal and external teams and committees related to project delivery. Attend meetings such as staff, safety, project, and public meetings. Attend various Design, Project Development, Project Management, and mandated training courses. May provide formal or informal training to others related to Travel Demand Modeling, Forecasting, Traffic Analysis and GIS.
