Job Purpose
The Associate Director plans and executes the School of Business Academic Advising Program and directs budget allocation to meet advising goals while serving as an integral part of the School of Business Success Center team focused on the holistic wellbeing and overall success of every student. This position supervises all activities and operations of the academic advising services provided through the School of Business Student Success Center. The Associate Director is responsible for meeting the academic support needs of all School of Business students, majors and minors specifically overseeing the design, development, and implementation of unified academic support services to assist students throughout their tenure in the School of Business. The Associate Director provides strategic guidance as it relates to academic advising and best practices. This person directs and oversees the academic advising program in conjunction with department heads, faculty, staff, students, and offices across campus. In managing academic advising, the Associate Director oversees the Assistant Director of Academic Advising, peer advisor program, is responsible for approval of decisions related to the academic advising area, and serves as the liaison to the College’s Academic Advising and Planning Center.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of professional work experience with students in academic support services or related field in higher education. Three years academic advising experience and experience working with faculty preferred. Knowledge of FERPA rules and regulations. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Evidence of excellent program management skills, an entrepreneurial approach, willingness to be innovative, creativity, and ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously; ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff and parents; exceptional administrative skills, including strategic planning and evaluation, and ability to think creatively and to successfully execute new initiatives; must have excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and; must have strong knowledge of FERPA rules and regulations and ensure departmental compliance with same. Knowledge of best practices in academic advising and ability to provide administrative support in areas of policy, program development and coordination between various campus entities; strong interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast changing environment; ability to resolve complex problems; extensive knowledge of the issues related to academic advising, including financial aid and risk management. Experience maintaining and developing specialized records and reports. Familiarity of widely-used software is required; experience using Banner and DegreeWorks is preferred. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Should be committed to a culture of diversity, respect and inclusion.

Creates, operates, and maintains systems to administer academic information and support to new and current students in the School of Business and for School of Business faculty advisors. Develops and maintains relationships and lines of communication with all School of Business department chairs and department administrative staff to ensure a flow of information that supports the student and streamlines processes to create efficiencies. Instructs and develops avenues of communication with faculty and students on CofC education guidelines, graduation policy, deadlines, and personal responsibility. Develops and implements academic advising procedures for School of Business faculty and students concerning academic progress, problems and scheduling to determine appropriate course of study. Ensures compliance with School of Business major, minor, and concentration program requirements. Monitors and evaluates academic progress for all students and makes appropriate referrals to campus resources when necessary. Makes independent decisions on policy waivers. Meets regularly with the Executive Director of Student Success to develop and assess philosophy and create innovative strategies for the School’s advising component and serves as an active team member with the SSC staff.

Conducts and supervises meetings with faculty advisors, student athletes, and students with specific needs, issues and concerns (i.e. students undergoing disciplinary action, STEP Readmission students, those served by the Center for Disability Services, and other special student populations). The associate director has an assigned student caseload and is expected to employ appropriate advising theories to help students accomplish educational goals using a holistic approach to facilitate student engagement and retention. Explains and assists students with comprehension of degree requirements (including general education curriculum), institutional policies and procedures, student support services, and opportunities for student engagement. Internally refers students to team members in the SB Student Success Center for career coaching, internship guidance, life design, and student engagement. Counsels students concerning academic progress and issues to determine appropriate course of study and ensures compliance with program requirements. Responds to student advising inquiries in a timely and professional manner. Refers students to other University services, as appropriate. Participates in School-wide retention efforts including participation on relevant committees and programs.

Develops and implements systems to maintain accurate data for reports and informed decision-making. Manages the Student Success Insights (SSI) system for the School of Business and trains others in use of the system. Assists with the analysis of enrollment and persistence patterns of students and other relevant data collection and analysis as needed to assist in program planning and accreditation. Develops comprehensive statistical reports and summaries to evaluate and assess majors, minors and concentrations. Serves as administrator for the Program of Study Management database system, which processes, tracks and monitors School of Business major, minor and concentration declarations. Trains academic departments on management of academic advising holds in the school and advises faculty and staff on changes in advising procedures and FERPA law. Conducts training for users individually and in groups to ensure users are knowledgeable and consistent in understanding DegreeWorks, POSM, SSI, and Banner. Maintains Cognos reports and assists with reports and data points needed for accreditation purposes. Manages records retention in accordance with federal, state and institutional regulations, including FERPA. Maintains current knowledge of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation standards to ensure continued success for the College and School.

Develops and manages programs to integrate transfer students and Bridge students into the School of Business in order to introduce these students to services and resources that support retention and four-year graduation rates. Organizes, manages, and conducts new student transfer orientation and registration for the School of Business. Holds responsibility for transfer student advisement and matriculation into the School of Business. Collaboratively develops and conducts New Student Orientation programming with Success Center team. Participates in recruitment/admissions activities and meets with prospective students and families as needed. Actively participates in SB Student Success Center activities with the SSC team to ensure success of all SSC events and programs including but not limited to events such as Cafe Success, Do What You Love, Awards and Graduation events, and others throughout the year. Oversees the web pages for School of Business advising, email messaging, handbooks, and other publications related to this area. Supervises follow-up and proactive targeted messaging to students.

Designs, oversees and executes the School of Business faculty advising training program, with particular emphasis on new faculty. Instructs faculty on degree requirements, related technology, institutional policies and procedures, student support services, and opportunities for co-curricular activities. Coordinates the assignment of students to faculty advisors and refers students to Student Success Center staff members to create a continuum of student services. Works with faculty advisors to assure that academic advising across the School of Business runs smoothly and effectively. Restructures, updates, and maintains faculty advising materials for majors, minors, and concentrations. Oversees the full utilization of the DegreeWorks System including training all new Student Success Center staff members. Establishes and communicates new academic advising protocol for School of Business majors, minors and concentrations, as needed.

Represents the School of Business on College committees as required and at events across campus. Undertakes special projects commensurate with the duties of the position.
