Job Purpose
The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the vision, leadership and administration of the staff, budget, and programs of a comprehensive Residence Life (RL) program, housing approximately 3,400 students in 38 campus residences. The Director helps ensure all RL programs and services align with and support the mission and strategic plans of the department, the division of Student Affairs, and of the College. The Director coordinates the recruitment and hiring of student and professional staff, coordinates the Residence Life on-call process, supervises the daytime oversight of residence hall front desks, and serves as the primary contact person with Public Safety and parents of students involved in critical incidents. This position reports to the Executive Vice President for Student Affairs.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree, preferably in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling or related field, plus additional training in the area of budget management and supervision; teaching and counseling experience is desirable. Minimum of five years full-time experience in residence hall administration. At least 7 -10 years of experience in a higher education setting are strongly preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Additional Comments Regarding Position
Requires occasional overnight and some travel. Requires evening and weekend attendance at meetings and programs. Requires rotating on-call duties.

1. Develops a residence life program focused on student success and engagement. Seeks collaborative partnerships throughout the college community to provide a holistic experience for residential students so they are successful inside and outside the classroom and therefore retained to the institution. b. Provides experiences and services which contribute to students’ overall success and personal development including engagement opportunities, collaborative programming, and resources in the form of staff support. c. Responsible to ensure the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the professional and student employees, including but not limited to Assistant Directors, Support Staff, and graduate and undergraduate student staff positions such as residence hall directors, resident assistants, desk assistants and others. Provides staff with opportunities for staff development and personal and professional growth. d. Provides residence hall activities that enhance the personal development of students, including a focus on wellness, adapting to the college environment, effective communication, academic support services, awareness of self, and awareness of others. e. Addresses diversity, equity and inclusion through hiring practices and the promotion of educational programs designed to increase individual and institutional awareness and appreciation of diversity and intercultural competence. f. Provides support for students/staff for situations involving students in crisis, student behavioral issues, student wellness, and roommate communication g. Ensures student participation in department decision making and leadership of activities related to their residential and campus community h. Oversees the staffing of residential front desks and works with campus Public Safety to ensure evening security staff receive relevant training. i. explores opportunities for further partnerships across campus, including themed and living learning communities.

2. Coordinates staff and programs with a variety of units within Residence Life, the Division of Student Affairs, Public Safety, and other areas in implementing crisis management and risk management systems for the residence halls. This is accomplished by the following: a. Trains and schedules the professional and student staff that serve on evening and weekend duty for the College. b. Develops and administers appropriate conduct policies and programs that affect the quality of life in the residence halls. Serves as the appellate hearing officer in certain cases. c. Participates in training programs with Public Safety.

3. Directs on-going planning and assessment programs for Residence Life to ensure high quality programs and services and to increase the understanding of students, their development, and their interaction with living environments. This is accomplished by the following: a. Provides leadership for staff and various teams within the department that focus on planning and assessment activities. b. Serves as the departmental representative to various areas in the university which coordinate planning and assessment activities.

4. Plans and manages the budget/fiscal operations of Residence Life. Administers and reports on various fiscal accounts, ensuring expenses do not exceed budgeted amounts. Oversees the administration of residence hall government accounts.

Works closely with the Director of Campus Housing to coordinate a seamless residential experience for students. This includes: coordinating and executing room inspections prior to each semester and at the conclusion of each semester; coordinating move-in for residential students in the fall and spring semester; working together on the room change process; communicating frequently regarding staff changes as well as student staff recruitment/placement; and communicating regarding any facilities issues that may significantly affect a student’s living space.

Collaborate with a number of offices, including Facilities Management, Public Safety, OVS, Dean of Students, Title IX, all Student Affairs departments, and other campus offices to ensure a holistic approach to student well-being and success.
Serve on campus committees in order to enhance communication and support for students. This includes, but is not limited to, the Students of Concern committee, the Late Withdrawal Petition Committee, the Capital Projects team, the Emergency Management Team, the Cougar Inclusion Team, the Apogee committee, and others as necessary.
