Summer Land Management Interns - Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

Appalachian Conservation Corps:
Appalachian Conservation Corps (ACC) works to connect young people to critical conservation service work across Appalachia and neighboring communities in Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, DC, and Pennsylvania. As a corps program, ACC partners with public land managers to identify, plan, and complete projects that improve public access, habitat quality, and economic development. ACC is a program of Conservation Legacy, a nationwide network of conservation service organizations. Our programs focus on service, place-based learning, life skills development, appreciation of diversity, civic responsibility, and career development. ACC also provides an opportunity for members to learn about the local environment and issues affecting it and introduces individuals to recreation and resource management careers. ACC welcomes national applicants, but also emphasizes the engagement of local individuals who represent the communities in which they serve.  
 
Position Summary:
This is a 10-week AmeriCorps Internship program with the Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. This park contains a variety of historical buildings important in early U.S. history, is culturally significant to pre-colonization indigenous communities, and has beautiful natural spaces.
The Land Management Interns will get to spend their summer working outside in Harper’s Ferry natural spaces on various projects within the Facility Division. The Facility Division is responsible for maintenance of about 60 buildings and about 17 miles of trails. The focus of projects this summer is to improve the appearance of the park and restore areas to a more natural state.
Project work includes:
·        Removing wooden worm fence to restore land back to original use.
·        Mowing grass and maintaining trails
·        Painting park gates, building, and signs
Other responsibilities may be included.
 
Interns will be trained on safety protocol by the facility division, learn different techniques for park maintenance, and gain a greater understanding of the National Park Service.

General Qualifications:
To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. All offers of employment are conditional upon completion of an acceptable check of the National Sex Offender Public Registry and federal criminal background check. Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
·        Interest and/or knowledge in conservation work
·        Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions using tools and lifting up to 40lbs.
·        Ability to work independently and as part of a team
·        Flexibility, adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment. 
·        Basic knowledge of trail maintenance
