Glass Studio Specialist

SUMMARY
Works directly with visitors both as a glass-making demonstrator and as a hands-on facilitator. Gives visitors a first-hand experience in the art of glassmaking. May also assist with production work and the Guest Artist Pavilion Project, (GAPP), artist in residence program. Develops and teaches classes within the TMA’s extensive glass studios including glassblowing, kiln forming, flame working, neon, and cold working. an innovative educator, working with youth 14 years and older and adults in art classes. Creates and facilitates creative, authentic, and project-based lessons. Facilitates glass experiences for on-site and off-site programming.
 
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Engages visitors by demonstrating the possibilities of glassmaking through a structured demonstration. Provides commentary covering the techniques used and information about the history of glassmaking with references to the Museum’s permanent collection.
  • Produces standard glass during the demonstration process for promotional use by the Museum.
  • Provides basic instruction to small groups of visitors, on a pre-arranged basis, to allow them to create a designated piece in the glass studio. Supervises participants to guide their efforts and assure safe use of materials and equipment.
  • Makes use of contact with visitors to promote Museum classes and other Museum programs.
  • Teaches a variety of glass making processes for workshops and extended courses up to 10 weeks.
  • Adheres to all safety practices standard in an art glass production facility and any additional safety practices implemented by Museum management.
  • Assists with production work for the Museum or external customers.
  • Presents Studio Art Glass workshops and classes by: 
  • Creates and facilitates lessons based upon themes or topics that are inspired by the Museum’s collection, special exhibitions and are responsive to student interests. 
  • Prepares and presents gallery and studio activities. 
  • Participates in self-reflection, training, and evaluation processes as scheduled.  
  • Performs related administrative duties preliminary and/or following studio classes and workshops, including but not limited to submitting lesson plans and supply requests for workshops and classes. 
  • Provides basic instruction to TMA students, on a pre-arranged basis, to allow them to create project in the glass studio and learn the basics of glass art.
  • Supervises students to guide their efforts and assure safe use of materials and equipment.
  • Attends training programs and glass staff meetings as scheduled by the Glass Studio Manager or supervisors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.  
 
RELATIONSHIPS
Works as a team member of the Learning and Interpretation department. Reports to the Glass Studio Manager. May receive assignment and/or work direction from supervisors. Works closely with other members of the Glass Studio Team, Museum Educators, members of the larger glass community and other Museum staff as appropriate.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts with specialization in glass
  • Previous experience demonstrating hot glass creation strongly preferred 
 
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to present in front of audiences in an engaging manner
  • Ability to work some evening and/or weekend shifts
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work takes place in a glass studio environment with elevated temperatures and on-going exposure to hot glass, broken glass and other materials requiring careful handling. There is a strong physical component of this position requiring lifting or moving materials or equipment as necessary to perform all duties.
