Position: Young Adult Advocacy and Programming Summer Intern
Department: Community and Culture

Job location:
  • Virtual OR in-person from June 5-July 26th
  • Must be in-person from Thursday, July 27 – Monday, August 7.
Pay Grade: 7

The Friends Committee on National Legislation is a nonprofit lobbying organization that works to advance issues of peace and justice. The Summer Internship program hires young adults to work with various teams for two months over the summer.
The Young Adult Advocacy and Programming Summer Intern works with FCNL’s Young Adult Program staff as they plan a 10-day advocacy training, the Washington Summer Intensive (WSI), for a group of young adult organizers. This training covers topics such as how to lobby, how to engage with the media, and how to successfully organize your community.
The intern’s responsibilities will focus heavily on Washington Summer Intensive. This will include:
  • Being the point of contact for the incoming Advocacy Corps for questions and giving them all information about logistics
  • Lobbying for Violence Interrupter Programs (the focus of our advocacy training this year) and completing a Letter to the Editor on the issue
  • Research/develop content as necessary for the various workshops in the training (the Young Adult Program team works together on this)
  • Helping the Young Adult Program team put together the materials necessary for the ten days of Washington Summer Intensive. This includes the congressional bios that are needed by the Advocacy Corps to more effectively lobby, the 10-day itinerary, and the legislative leave-behinds/backgrounders.
  • Being the organizer of and point of contact for all catering throughout the ten days.
  • Organizing the personal information/dietary restrictions of the Advocacy Corps by sending out surveys and keeping that information.
  • Travel to Washington, DC for the Washington Summer Intensive
  • Assisting with day-of logistics and support of the Advocacy Corps during the ten days of Washington Summer Intensive
  • Other duties as assigned.
Interns are also encouraged to seek out and attend virtual forums at think tanks, congressional briefings, coalition meetings, and other networking events as opportunities arise. Supervisors work with their interns to make sure interns get what they need/want from the experience.
A completed application will include:
  • Complete application questions.
  • Resume (including education, work, extracurricular, and volunteer experience).
Applications are due on April 3, 2023. This year we will prioritize applicants who have previously completed another Young Adult Program, such as the Advocacy Corps.
FCNL offers an hourly rate of $17.00 for the eight-week internship. This intern position is expected to follow the FCNL work week which is M-F from 9-5:30 pm EST. This intern position may be either in-person or virtual, and the program runs from Monday, June 5, 2023 through Friday, July 28, 2023. Orientation is required and you are required to be available for the full two months.
In addition to working closely with a professional staff member at FCNL, interns will have opportunities to participate in lobbying, organizing and policy events.
Summer Interns may be asked to attend Quaker programming, including Silent Reflection, in order to meet and connect with Quaker constituents. There is no requirement to worship at these gatherings.
FCNL requires all staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the date of hire, with the exception to those with religious, medical, and/or other exemptions. Candidates must provide acceptable proof of vaccination by the date of hire as a condition of in-person or hybrid employment.
