This position joins the Oregon Health Authority statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. Selections are made on a rolling basis, and early applications are strongly encouraged. The last day to apply is April 12, 2023. The member will support the Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion program’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) to engage young people in assessing opinions through lived, shared experience, polls and social research, and present the results to local leaders and other key stakeholders who influence their lives. The YAB consists of community members (ages 14-19) who strive to address issues affecting Multnomah County youth. YAB members provide recommendations to address the complex societal issues that perpetuate differences in health outcomes. The program focuses on preventable causes of early death and disability in Multnomah County, creating a culture that affirms and advocates for health and justice of youth. The program works in neighborhoods with the highest rates of disease and other key health indicators, crime/youth violence, and socioeconomic disparities. The AmeriCorps member will support community-informed planning and decision-making, training and technical assistance to build school and community partner capacity, and communications. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health. The OHA VISTA Partnership Project is committed to building a diverse workforce. We encourage candidates from communities of color, disability, LGBTQIA, and linguistically diverse populations to consider application to our positions.

The AmeriCorps member will support the Multnomah County Health Department’s Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Program by serving as a co-facilitator of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB), helping to develop annual plan, meeting structures, and trainings for young people and community members related to prevention and health promotion. The member will support the YAB members on collecting, analyzing, and compiling data to share with key stakeholders, developing projects to address key issues relating to chronic disease health disparities in Multnomah County. The member will also work with Communication Specialist(s) to develop youth friendly content focused on violence prevention, health education and promotion, and healthy and active living.
