The goal of the Legislative Advocacy program is to advance legislation at the State
House. Our current advocacy is a campaign to advocate for comprehensive juvenile
justice reform through the legislative process to: (1) require transparency and
accountability in child-serving systems; (2) prevent entry into the legal system; and (3)
reduce the harm of legal system involvement. Interns assist with campaigns as well as
coalition management; research and report drafting; voter education; and legislative and
grassroots event planning.

We are seeking public health students to assist with two projects, which will be predominantly remote with some opportunities for in-person meetings:

Raise the (Upper) Age campaign: The goal of this campaign is to end the automatic
prosecution of older adolescents and shifting 18- to 20-year-olds into the juvenile justice
system. The Public Health student will (1) finalize a public-health oriented statement of
support for the campaign; and (2) outreach to public health leaders and professionals to
build a cohort of public health and medical experts and institutions to endorse the
campaign. The goal of the campaign is to get a diverse group of signatories culminating
in a media and legislative event highlighting this support, and mobilizing individuals to
submit testimony and letters of support to advance this campaign. This position will
predominantly require a lot of outreach, networking and meeting key stakeholders and
event planning. This project is on-going with no defined end date.

Implementation of Raising the Lower Age: CfJJ gets regular requests from
advocates across the country asking about our implementation of the law raising the
age of juvenile jurisdiction from 7 to 12, particularly asking the question "What is the
response to children who break the law but can no longer be arrested or prosecuted?"
CfJJ has collected resources and the goal of this project is to publish a joint CfJJ-NJJN
report on implementation to serve as a guide for policy makers and law enforcement,
and to assist advocacy organizations across the country (in the NJJN network) to raise
the lower age of prosecution in their state. This project will require interviewing key
stakeholders to document the impact of RtA12 on their ability to serve children and
identifying data sources for analysis of the impact of this law. The project will culminate
into a policy brief with a national forum to release the analysis. This project is expected
to run through the Summer 2023 semester, possibly into the Fall 2023 semester.

To apply for the position, please submit (1) a cover letter, (2) resume, and (3) a 2-3
page policy writing sample and/or other examples of your work that demonstrate your
writing or data analysis skills to: cfjj@cfjj.org. Please write "Legislative
Advocacy PH Internship" in the subject line and include your projected internship
start/end dates in your cover letter.
