This position is intended for a research technician who can assist in planning, performing and managing clinical studies at the Nadkarni Laboratory at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine. The position requires an individual capable of conducting and supporting various aspects of human studies, such as managing the Institutional Review Board applications, collecting tissue specimens, tracking and logging the collected specimens, conducting the experimental studies, including optical imaging, microscopy, histopathological analysis, data analysis, preparing reports, and assisting the principal investigator and the research team with writing manuscripts and grants applications. The Research Technician will work under the general guidance of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Seemantini Nadkarni, and research team members. Most of the work for this position will occur in an office and laboratory environment.
At the Nadkarni Laboratory, the major thrust of our research is the innovation and investigation of light-based technologies that interrogate the mechanical behavior of tissue, and on shedding light on the role of tissue mechanics in disease etiology, progression and prognosis. Our laboratory is located at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. The research efforts in our laboratory are directed towards both, fundamental and translational areas of Biomedical Optics to address major questions related to clinical medicine and biological sciences.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assists with study procedures including blood and tissue sample collection from core laboratories and tissue repositories, sample preparation and testing.
- Assists with and performs experiments using human tissues, cells and animal specimens to validate novel optical technologies
- Prepares reagents for testing and conducts shelf life and reagent stability tests. Keeps records of reagents’ inventory, expiration dates.
- May perform independent literature searches.
- Prepares data for analysis and data entry.
- Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
- Maintains and orders supplies.
- Updates study forms per protocol, assists in amending, updating, and preparing IRB protocols and annual reports required for studies
- Assists with QA/QC procedures on lab instruments, prepares and maintains training documents
- Coordinates activities related to human subjects research including collecting, organizing, and documenting patient data from medical records, core laboratories and tissue bank repositories.
- Interacts internally with other hospital departments such as Epic, Red Cap, Harvard Catalyst, Pharmacy, and Environmental Services as needed, and externally with vendors or instrument manufacturers
- Performs other administrative support duties as assigned
- Accepts responsibilities for other job-related projects as requested.
- May assist in preparing study reports as required and may assist in training new members.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required:
- Ability to multitask and follow directions as required for the job
- Experience in wet lab and /or bench research and willingness to learn new instrument operating skills
- Careful attention to details
- Excellent organization skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to work with deadlines.
- Working knowledge of clinical research protocols
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Endnote, Statistical analysis tools)
- Ability to interact and collaborate well with others and work together as a part of a cohesive team
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s degree required in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, biomedical engineering or related field
EXPERIENCE:
- Prior hands-on wet lab research experience for at least 2 years is desired.
- An understanding of IRB review process, study design, basic laboratory skills, data analysis as well as good writing and editing skills is desired.
