TRS Investment Officer 2 - Public Equities

This position is eligible for participation in NYSTRS’ Flexible Work Pilot Program.

The New York State Teachers’ Retirement System is seeking candidates for an Investment Officer position to support the management of the System’s Public Equity investments. Under the direction of the Manager of Quantitative Strategies, the Investment Officer will participate in the implementation of the internally managed portfolios. Specific responsibilities will include validation of the daily investment process, monitoring of portfolio positioning, portfolio construction, performance attribution and reporting. The Investment Officer will also assist with the development of new internally managed strategies, participate in external manager monitoring, and may mentor junior staff. The position may require travel.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree and three years of professional experience either directly engaged in, or in support of, trading and/or portfolio management. This experience must have included at least two years of experience in one of the following: trading public equities for a buy-side organization, broker dealer or public pension plan; utilizing portfolio management tools; utilizing portfolio management concepts, specifically risk management, portfolio construction and performance attribution; managing public market equity investments, including direct portfolio management and oversight of externally-managed portfolios; or investment research stock selection.

Substitutions: A master’s degree in Business Administration or a closely related field may substitute for one year of experience; successful completion of all three levels of the CFA exam may substitute for one year of experience; holding a Certificate in Investment Performance Management may substitute for six months of experience.

A maximum of one year of experience substitution is permitted.

Preferred Qualifications· An advanced degree in finance, accounting, business administration, economics, statistics, computer science or related field of study.
· Experience managing passive and/or active institutional public equity portfolios.
· A knowledge of international market characteristics, corporate action types, foreign currency/cash management and futures equitization.
· Familiarity with index provider methodologies e.g., S&P, MSCI, FTSE-Russell
· An understanding of quantitative portfolio management concepts such as tracking error, optimization and factor investing.
· Portfolio analytics expertise using industry standard platforms such as FactSet, Barra or Aladdin.
· Programming experience with R or equivalent.
· Chartered Financial Analyst designation or willingness to pursue.
· Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
· Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
· High degree of professionalism and integrity.

Job Duties

Description
The TRS Investment Officer 2-Public Equities will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
· Daily monitoring of internal portfolios for consistency with stated objectives
· Validate the daily investment process; check daily holdings reconciliation reports and facilitate resolution of any position discrepancies and other data related issues
· Review index changes and corporate action events for impact on internal portfolios and generate recommendations for specific actions resulting from such events
· Rebalance internal portfolios according to investment guidelines and cash-flow instructions; run optimizations, review optimal portfolio characteristics, and communicate trade instructions to trader
· Monitor positioning within assigned sector for an internally managed quantitative strategy; Develop understanding of industry dynamics and become familiar with companies in the sector. Review stock-selection model ranks for reasonableness (e.g. following company earnings announcements and filings) and make recommendations to adjust positioning for alpha improvement opportunities and risk control.
· Develop ideas to improve the investment process by increasing workflow efficiencies and eliminate manual processes. Interface with other groups as necessary to make recommendations and implement process improvements
· Demonstrate initiative by generating and testing new ideas for additional portfolio strategies and improvement to the current portfolio’s performance
· Generate data/reports as necessary for monthly internal investment committee, investment advisory committee, quarterly board packages, investment policy manual, CAFR
· Review academic and professional journals for relevant research and periodically report on findings
· Attend various committee and quarterly board meetings, as necessary, presenting relevant material as required
· Participate in relevant conferences and educational sessions to gain exposure to market insights and develop industry awareness through networking with peers
