Curatorial and Communications Intern




Position: Curatorial and Communications Intern
Status: Part-time (20-25 hrs/week), non-exempt; $17.50/hour
Reports to: Director & Curator of Public Art 
Department: Public Art

Position Description
The Greenway Conservancy is seeking a creative, motivated, and engaging person to join our team as a paid Curatorial and Communications Intern with our Public Art Team. The primary role of the Public Art Intern is to assist the Public Art Department with public art project management and community engagement.

Reporting to the Director & Curator of Public Art, the intern will work 20-25 hours per week to support the Conservancy's Public Art Program, with the larger goal of engaging diverse communities of visitors that come to The Greenway to gather, play, unwind, and explore. 

This position offers an undergraduate student or recent graduate the opportunity to gain firsthand experience with a wide range of responsibilities, including coordinating with artists, local partners, conducting studio visits, assisting with installation of public art projects, and curatorial research and writing. The Curatorial and Communications Intern will also assist with day to day digital communications to support storytelling efforts for ongoing and upcoming projects The Greenway’s website and social media platforms.

In addition to working closely with The Greenway’s curatorial staff, the intern will have opportunities to meet with and connect with various arts organizations, professionals, and networks to gain an understanding of broader professional duties and possible career paths within the cultural and arts sphere.⁠

Responsibilities
Assist with Project Management & Art Installation
  • Work directly with the Director & Curator of Public Art to support the process of public art creation and installation.
  • Provide preparation for and assistance to artists and fabricators on site for installation and deinstallation.
  • Support artist project development and administration.
  • Independent projects may vary based on the interests and experience of the selected candidate.

Communications & Marketing 
  • Generate public awareness and engagement for Conservancy public art project, artists and programming, including:
  • Research and gather information on artists, their practices, and their upcoming projects on The Greenway.
  • Interview artists. 
  • Create and develop content for social media channels.
  • Support public art documentation efforts. 
  • Follow digital media developments, trends, and standards and share observations internally throughout the department and organization.
  • Maintain and add images to the public art photo library.

Visitor & Community Engagement
  • Provide programmatic support for all Public Art Programs throughout the season.
  • Support event and reception coordination efforts.
  • Support Public Art Tours throughout the season in collaboration with Volunteer Coordinator. 
  • Work outdoors, handle physical tasks, and conduct work with professionalism and compassion for everyone encountered.
  • Contribute to effective relationships with third-party vendors, organizations, cultural and community organizations, and Conservancy personnel.
  • Other duties as assigned related to the Conservancy’s mission or to support partners or stakeholders.

The Public Art Intern will have the opportunity to participate in activities that increase their understanding of the Conservancy’s work, such as brown bag lunch-and-learns, studio visits with artists, and monthly staff meetings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ideal candidate has a strong interest and/or some experience in art administration, studio art, art history, urban planning, marketing, communications, design and/or related field with a demonstrated interest in public art and/or spatial justice.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual skills in Spanish, Mandarin, and/or Cantonese or other languages are a plus.
  • Social media experience and broad knowledge of platforms, trends, and tools necessary to support a successful social media strategy 
  • Computer proficiency, especially in Google for Work (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail) and Microsoft (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) preferred. .
  • Video, photo and/or graphic design skills preferred (but not required), including familiarity with Adobe Creative Suites programs (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather, kneel or stand for periods of time, and be  able to lift 50 pounds, which are all needed for on-site events..
**Experience working in diverse and inclusive organizations and/or communities is a plus.*
Logistics
  • This is a paid position with sick time benefits. Compensation will be $17.50/hour. 
  • The position duration is 12 weeks, beginning early June 2023 through September 1, 2023 
  • Work hours are typically 20-25 hours/week, 4-6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and evening work required (with advanced notice).
  • Work will take place both inside the Greenway offices as well as outdoors on-site at The Greenway park. Some remote work may be possible on non-install days.
