Ship Systems Engineer

Are you looking for an entry-level Engineering role that will provide you with the ability to join a team of analysts, engineers, and support personnel (and sub-contractors) providing systems engineering support to the U.S. Navy Shipbuilding programs?  As a part of this dynamic team located in Washington, D.C., you will be expected to bring your inquisitiveness, drive, and collaborative skills to make an impact towards our military defense and safety of our sailors.
 
This position will provide support in researching, planning, managing, conducting, executing, and evaluating Ship Systems integration and test/trial activities. You will provide backup support to the DDG 51 Ship Program Reviews, participate in trials, when necessary, provide Shipchecks, meeting participation and preparing meeting minutes. Candidates will provide flexible support to customer for the coordination of requirements reviews, technical reviews, and test events of Engineering Ship Systems on New Construction ARLEIGH BURKE Class Destroyers.
 
In this role, you will:
 
  • Provide support to clients developing and maintaining U.S. Navy surface ships systems and associated subsystems, under supervision.
  • Provide analytical support for hull, mechanical and electrical systems; total ship engineering; ship surveillance; and all types of waterfront engineering and inspections.
  • Evaluate and review shipbuilder work packages, conduct photo documentation, develop databases allowing searches for key information in written correspondence.
  • Review drawings, Initial Change Proposals (ICP), Engineering Change Proposals (ECP), waterfront changes, work items, design reviews condition reports and trial cards.
  • Review initial designs, developments, and analysis of new ships and/or ship systems.
  • Provide support in the development of designs for current and conceptualized ships, systems, and equipment. Evaluate designs for feasibility.
  • Assess compliance with Naval regulatory and design standards.
  • Interface with stakeholders and cross functional teams to ensure necessary resource availability for ship/system.
  • Review qualification test procedures and participating in qualification testing and trials.
  • Research recent technology and/or development tools to remain informed of current technology.
  • Maintain communications with SUPSHIP, NAVAIR and other commands, including laboratories and support contractors, in resolving technical issues impact (or have potential to impact) the design or performance of the ship class.
 
To be successful in this role, you will have the following:
 
  • An Active or current DoD Secret security clearance or meet the requirements for clearance sponsorship.
  • Bachelor's degree in naval architecture, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, systems engineering (ABET-Accredited), or a related discipline. (In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than six years of applicable work experience. Work experience may be adjusted based on education, or highly specialized knowledge or uniquely applicable experience for positions involving recent technology.)
  • Up to two years’ experience.
  • Experience working with ship and ship system design principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with maritime HM&E systems and Naval construction process and with maritime fuel systems, Gas Turbine Propulsion, Gas Turbine Generators, Saltwater Cooling systems, damage control systems and auxiliary systems.
  • Sound oral and written communications skillset.
  • Ability to work efficiently with limited or no supervision.
  • Sound skillset using the Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
 
  Additional desired experience and skills include having the following:
 
  • Knowledge of DDG 51 acquisition program and processes.
  • Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules.
  • Experience working with ship system performance assessment and prediction methods.
  • Experience working with Navy ship and ship system design principles and practices.
  • Former Navy gas turbine shipboard auxiliary or main propulsion experience.
  • Experience working with applicable regulatory, commercial, and military standards and classification society rules.
