Goodwill NNE AmeriCorps - RSU #4 - Youth Public Health - Wales, ME

Located in the Androscoggin River Valley, in an area of forested hills and lakes, RSU #4 is a public school district serving approximately 1300 students from the rural towns of Sabattus, Wales and Litchfield in Maine. The community is on the outskirts of the city of Lewiston and offers an abundance of outdoor recreation nearby, and a closely-knit, laid-back community feel. Students attend five schools covering grades PreK-12. Approximately 40% of the students are meeting the state benchmarks in Math and Language Arts on the State assessment. RSU #4's mission is "Inspiring All Leaders to Achieve Future Success" and we are committed to educating over 1300 students in grades Pre-K through grade 12. Please check out our website www.rsu4.org. Public Health AmeriCorps program places members with community organizations in Maine to address CDC determined public health needs for the most underserved populations. Public Health Youth Development members strive to narrow this gap by increasing social and emotional skills and academic engagement among students who have been impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Members support a portfolio of youth through mentoring, school skills support, social and emotional wellness, and community engagement, while building organizational capacity. At RSU #4, the member will serve as a mentor to a portfolio of up to ten students in grades 5-12 who have been impacted by ACEs and were disproportionately affected by the disruption of in-person learning during COVID. The pandemic caused them to be disconnected from school and/or struggle emotionally, socially, and academically.

Member Duties : The member will develop a relationship with youth in our high school alternative program and/or students who have been identified for our middle school STEM program to support them in the educational environment, so that they are able to be successful. Mentorship may also be utilized for our homeless/unaccompanied youth or students struggling with truancy. The member will be immersed into our school community, so as to be able to best support the students on their caseload. The member will meet with students at least once a week, 1 to 1 or in small groups. The member will provide academic support, if needed; support students in their future plans; and be there to listen to their struggles, directing youth to resources that may be needed. We are looking for a member who can give our students hope and reengage them in the educational process. Join RSU #4 and be the Champion these students need!
