Senior Research Scientist

Inova's Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center is seeking a Full Time Senior Research Scientist to join their team!  

The Saville Research Scientist Sr oversees the development of the Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Research Program for ISCI both for its administrative functions and primary research/project objectives. Works collaboratively with the Saville clinical team to design and write investigator-initiated studies and grant applications, including the implementation of a research registry for the Saville program incorporating clinical, genomic and biobanking capability. Organizes and communicates cancer research results, analyses, and other information for written, graphic, pictorial, or multimedia presentations within the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, the community and to local, regional and national granting agencies. A background in health equity is preferred.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Designs, writes and helps implement investigator-initiated protocols to aid in prevention and early detection of cancer in the general and high-risk populations and in topics related to survivorship care. Researches, develops, and employs appropriate data collection methodology, tools and processes to maximize collection efficiency and minimize collection bias within the prescribed project time line.
  • Develops applications for grant submissions to support research projects, meeting all required timelines.
  • Devises strategies to deal with issues or problems detected during implementation of protocols, communicate recommendations with the site staff, and if appropriate, assists the site in the implementation of the recommended solutions to these issues on an ongoing basis.
  • Collects and manages processing and storage of biological samples collected. Coordinates the specimen and data collection and storage processes with the appropriate ISCI staff to facilitate research activities, according to project schedules. Collects, validates, and enters data from cancer research established tools, technology and databases to facilitate data analysis.
  • Collaborates with the research staff in the development of data collection forms, the preparation of the research and clinical data collected, and the management of such data in preparation for data analysis, in an accurate manner to meet all required timelines. Collaborates with the Executive Director of the Saville Center and the Executive Director of Life with Cancer, other Saville investigators, bioinformatic scientists and statisticians in preparing technical methods/results of research projects for publication in professional journals and presentations at professional meetings, in an accurate manner to meet all required timelines.
  • Ensures that confidentiality of data to protect the research subjects' privacy is maintained at all times.
  • Collaborates well within a team to understand the needs of the Centers.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director of the Saville Center and the Executive Director of Life with Cancer and other investigators in the development of adequate data collection and management systems to affect desired study outcomes, according to project schedules. Organizes and communicates research results, analyses, and other information for written, graphic, pictorial, or multimedia presentations within the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, the community and to local, regional and national granting agencies.
  • Writes manuscripts for publication in professional health care journals in conjunction with the Principal Investigator or Project Coordinator, at least one annually. Collaborate with the Executive Director of the Saville Center and the Executive Director of Life with Cancer and other investigators in the preparation of presentations to major professional societies related to the investigator-initiated protocols developed, meeting all required timelines. Effectively present research data for one-on-one meetings, small and/or large group presentations, at least one annually.
  • Self-starter who is motivated to procure funding independently.
  • Preferred candidates will have excellent writing skills and prior experience in cancer prevention, survivorship and/or health equity research.

  • Fours years Postdoctoral research experience

Education:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a Biological Science
