Pay Salary: $68,411-$83,153 (During first six months at academy)

Pay Salary: $90,346-$115,307 (Immediately upon graduation)

The Position: Police Recruit is the entry-level position to a career in municipal law enforcement.  Police Recruits learn and participate in established curriculum and subsequently pass all tests given by training staff, including academics and manipulative skills such as defensive tactics, firing weapons with accuracy, and driving at high speeds on a set test course while maintaining control.  After successfully completing the Police Academy, the Police Recruit will then automatically promote to the classification of Peace Officer.  

Essential Functions: Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: learn and participate in all classroom and field activities while attending the police academy; write/type reports and complete all assignments; participate in daily physical training at the same intensity as the majority of the group, or as directed by academy training staff; run up to six miles at an eight minute/mile pace; perform up to sixty sit-ups straight; perform sixty push-ups straight; spar with training staff and/or fellow recruits; fire weapons; drive vehicles; talk on radio; learn about community-based policing, familiarization between law enforcement and community residents and collaborative problem solving; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; and perform other related duties and physical training activities as assigned.

 

The hiring process is approximately 3-5 months long.

2.           You will take the written test (PELLETB) or waive it off with an AA degree or higher

3.           You will take the Physical Agility Test, (will not take PAT if AA or BA degree submitted)

The PAT consists of:

-1.5 mile run in under 14 minutes

-Dummy Drag (165lb)

-Obstacle Course

-Wall clearance

-500-meter sprint

4.           If successful, you will be invited to the background investigation phase.

5.           Nearing the end of backgrounds you will take your polygraph at a later date.

6.           After completion of the polygraph, you will interview with our Chief of Police

7.           The Chief may or may not give you a job offer

8.           If you receive a job offer, it will be on the condition you successfully complete a medical and psychological exam

9.           Once you complete the medical and psychological exam, you will receive an academy date

HIGHLIGHTS:

1.      Effective July 2023: Starting salary range of Police Recruit: $68k-$83K depending on experience.

2.      Effective July 2023: Police Officer Top pay of $115k, reached within 4 years.

3.      We currently have UP to a $25,000 Lateral Bonus, up to $5,000 Moving Bonus, and starting Police Recruit Pay UP to $83,000 all based on experience. (Eligibility: Honorable Discharged from Military, 1-yr experience as Private/Non-Safety Correctional/Detentions Officers. 6-mnths experience as Correctional Deputy Sheriff, Military Police or Military Detentions, Peace officer experience in another state, and Federal Law Enforcement Exp.)

4.      Medical option fully paid by the city.

5.      90% approval rating by the city.

6.      Innovative technologies: UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) Drones, Live 911 dispatch program, New Hybrid Patrol vehicle fleet, department issued smartphones, Redlight preemptive technology (synced computers allow officers to have green lights through intersections for high priority calls).

7.      Specialty assignment opportunities (SWAT, K9, Motors, Crimes of Violence, Narcotics Detectives, Street Team Gang Suppression Unit, Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), Community Relations team, Family Protection Unit, Property Crimes Unit, Professional Standards Unit, Federal Task Forces (Fugitive task Force, Regional Auto Theft Task Force, International Crimes, Drug Enforcement Admin (DEA) Task force), School Resource Officer, plus many more.

8.      Multi-Community Suburban housing development in the newly developed eastern section of Chula Vista. Multi-Million-dollar Business district, convention center and University district being developed. The City is slated for the largest growth in San Diego County.
