Engineer Associate EDGE (Statewide Opportunities)

Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to announce an opportunity to serve as an Engineer Associate (EDGE).

These positions are located in Northern Virginia, Staunton, Richmond, Fredericksburg, Central Office – Downtown Richmond and Charlottesville, Bristol, Lynchburg, Hampton Roads, Culpeper and Salem Districts.

Through this structured 24-month practical training program you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop mission-critical technical skills and leadership competencies.
  • Work on impactful projects and provide influence on their completion.
  • Rotate across a wide variety of civil engineering, maintenance, operations, business, and support functions during year one.
  • Gain specialized experience in your desired area of focus (i.e. roadway or structural design, traffic engineering, operations, materials, land use, maintenance, residency operations, construction or transportation planning) during year two.

When you complete the EDGE Program, you will have the opportunity to be placed in a position that aligns with your specialty area and VDOT’s workforce needs. Newly hired EDGE Associates will be paid at an advertised market competitive salary rate upon hire and for the length of the two-year program as outlined below.

VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels and ferry systems. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, VDOT also provides funding for airports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country, employing just over 7,000 employees across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have or will have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or related degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) program conferred between May 2022 and May 2024. If you are an Armed Services Veteran, your degree should be conferred Between May 2018 and May 2024.
  • Skill in basic computer operations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions, as well as determine more efficient processes to produce results and maximize resources.
  • Ability to apply engineering knowledge to complete projects and other tasks.
  • Knowledge of construction and maintenance contract policies and procedures.
  • Ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (F.E.) and obtain the Engineering in Training (EIT) designation within 9 months of employment.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Additional Considerations

Successful candidates will have demonstrated academic excellence in their major program and be motivated, customer focused and action-oriented individuals with a drive for learning on the job and achieving results. You will have demonstrated the ability to make quality and timely decisions, take initiative, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, prioritize and organize multiple demands in a continuously changing environment, use a computer and software applications, and can meet established deadlines. Ability to anticipate problems, provide solutions, follow instructions, learn quickly and collaborate with teammates. In addition, preferred candidates will have:

  • Experience in roadway transportation
  • Experience in design technology, interpreting technical plans and specifications.
  • Experience in roadway design and geometric design applications.
  • Possess the Engineer in Training (EIT) designation at time of employment.

  • Work assignments may require unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain, work in an outdoor environment, and the ability to lift, bend and stand for long periods of time.
