Instructional Sailing Director

Classification: Part-time seasonal employment

Dates of Employment: June through Labor Day w/occasional assistance outside this period

Pay: $18.00 - $25.00

Reports to: SYC Commodore and Board of Directors


 

Job Description: Manage the sailing and paddling instructional activities while providing a safe and fun experience for SYC membership, students, and employees. 


 

The Instructional Director (ID) is responsible for the following:

  • Management of sailing and paddling instructional activities.
  • Management of the SYC Instructors including daily responsibilities, scheduling, and training, with support from Waterfront Director and Assistant Instructional Director. 
  • Follow curriculum and tailor activities where needed with easy-to-follow guidance for building skills at the beginner and intermediate lessons.
  • Communicate effectively and frequently with sailing school guardians regarding expectations, weather related alerts, and equipment reminders. 
  • Create a fair rotation for instructors teaching private lessons.
  • Ensure safety of all sailors while on and off the water.
  • Provide SYC members and lesson registrants with friendly and courteous service.
  • Uphold the SYC Rules, Courtesies and Code of Conduct.
  • Comply with Farm Pond Rules and Regulations.
  • Coordinate with the Waterfront Director regarding boat maintenance and scheduling vessel use for lessons.


Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older before June 15, 2024.
  • At least three years of sailing experience is required, advanced dinghy sailing experience preferred. 
  • Must be comfortable operating a sailboat independently in all conditions and remain calm during emergencies.
  • Current First Aid and Advanced CPR Certification; Red Cross Lifeguard Certification preferred.
  • Available on evenings and weekends during the season for events, and to help in waterfront roles.
  • Previous staff management experience, experience with teenagers preferred.
  • Excellent managerial and organizational skills; ability to multitask.
  • Initiative to self-manage, prioritize tasks, and complete projects.


Other responsibilities

  • Organize and coordinate activities on the SYC waterfront.
  • Utilize and update Instructional Director Dashboard before and during season
  • Submit weekly summaries through Dashboard of any student, staff, boat, or other issues for Board review. 
  • Supervise, support, and train Instructors.
  • Coordinate with and support the Waterfront Staff.
  • Maintain and convey high expectations for safety, quality, effort, and member service.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to SYC members, volunteers, town officials, and others.
  • Attend all staff meetings, work with designated Board members, and Waterfront Director.
  • Address issues with support staff.
  • Be familiar with offerings of the SYC (memberships, classes, and events) and be able to answer questions from members and non-members. 
  • Be a role model for inclusive behavior and foster a positive group atmosphere. 
  • Complete end of season staff evaluations for hiring.
  • Attend Instructional Director trainings before the season starts. 
  • Plan and run Instructor orientation and training including expectations, systems, procedures & skills.
  • Attend SYC board of directors meetings, as necessary.
