SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
During the internship, students will work on projects that have a measurable impact on our business while being coached and mentored by Amtrak Labor Relations professionals. This internship in Human Resources- Labor Relations is designed to provide the foundation to early career professionals, through fast-paced, real world, hands-on experience leading projects in areas such as:

 

 

  • Day to day Labor Relations operations including contract review and interpretation, communication with operating craft employees, preparing claim declination letters, and supporting projects which impact these groups
  • Attending arbitrations, preparing research, and writing briefs for arbitration focused on arbitral precedent, past practice, and review of investigation transcripts
  • Assisting with internal training efforts focused on Labor Relations

 

In addition to your valuable on-the-job learning, interns participate in a robust internship program that includes professional development activities, cross-functional projects, senior leader exposure, networking events, and visits to a variety of Amtrak sites. These events will help you gain exposure to the many exciting opportunities that lay ahead of you as you build your career at Amtrak.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree with a focus in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Legal Studies/Pre-Law, Political Science, or a related field
  • Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution
  • Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at the minimum
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher

 

Please be advised that the Fall 2023 internship program will run from September 18th - April 26th (full academic year).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Relevant work experience and/or HR internship experience
  • Interest in learning more about Labor Relations at a large organization Demonstrated leadership experience within campus and/or the community
  • Highly skilled communicator (verbal and written), strong analytical skills, and presentation skills Strong critical thinking and analysis skills; interest in research and writing
  • Ability to execute with minimal direction and prepared to navigate change with patience and optimism
  • Intellectually curious; always willing to probe deeper to understand organizational behavior and performance

 

COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

The hourly range is $17.50 per hour- $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as apart of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
