Child Welfare Trainer (Social Services Specialist III) - ELT-DFS-23007

As a Child Welfare Trainer, you will be part of a team preparing new practitioners to engage in optimal practice in their child welfare roles. The Children, Youth and Families (CYF) Division within DFS is seeking a temporary position working up to 900 hours per calendar year to provide training, facilitation and coaching to new child welfare practitioners as part of our Child Welfare Institute (CWI) Onboarding Academy. The seven-week Onboarding Academy will operate three to four times per year. This position is based in the Fairfax office. Occasional travel is required to our regional offices in Reston, Annandale, and South County. 

In this job, you will be supported by a team of caring people working together to keep children safe and strengthen families.

You will make an impact by:

  • Delivering training based on curricula developed for the CWI Onboarding Academy
  • Facilitating Learning Circles to deepen learning related to clinical practice
  • Coaching new practitioners during simulation practice to support skill development
  • Providing guidance and feedback to new practitioners as they participate in the CWI Onboarding Academy
  • Liaising with unit supervisors to collaborate on supporting the development of new practitioners
  • Supporting unit supervisors in their onboarding efforts
  • Collaborating with other CWI support and training staff to support an integrated experience for all involved
  • Infusing the Safe & Connected™ practice model throughout CYF
  • Participating in the evaluation of the CWI Onboarding Academy
  • Maintaining necessary records related to the CWI Onboarding Academy
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Employment Standards

MINIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree, plus three years of professional social work experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a Child Protective Services check.

This position is considered essential personnel and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in social work (MSW) or a related human services degree
  • Experience in performing child protective investigations, foster care and/or family preservation services
  • Experience delivering training
  • Experience providing guidance and feedback to child welfare practitioners

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires performing tasks with risks of secondary traumatic stress (STS). Ability to navigate through and make decisions in stressful and crisis situations. Sufficiently mobile to travel outside the office for client contact, court appearances, community events, and to conduct family assessments and investigations of allegations of child abuse and neglect. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to use automated technology. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle, and make use of personal vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
