Engineer I or II

(Regular, Exempt)

Starting Salary Range:                                                           

Engineer I $59,550.40 - $74,443.20/annualized, DOQ

Engineer II $66,705.60 - $83,387.20/annualized, DOQ

(Engineer I)

Summary/Objective

The Engineer I is primarily responsible for preliminary engineering, contract drawing development and specification development as assigned. The Engineer I may also be assigned to study/plan review or limited project management.

Essential Functions

Designs, revises, and processes in-house engineering projects and studies.

  • Coordinates with the Principal Civil Engineer, Engineer II, Engineer III, and Stormwater Manager on projects and studies, performs them, and facilitates processing.
  • Contributes to a quality and efficient project by creativeness, thoroughness and accuracy of designs and studies.
  • Conducts research for property ownership, including right-of-way and easement boundaries, previous construction documentation and field site visits.
  • Develops in-house traffic studies, stormwater studies or other studies as assigned.
  • Develops in-house designs for traffic, transportation, stormwater, water and sanitary sewer projects contributing to the creation of construction contract documents (plans and specifications).
  • Prepares cost estimates and other documentation that supports engineering projects.
  • Prepares permit applications for regulatory approvals needed for construction projects.
  • Reviews plats; construction plans and specifications; and other studies as assigned to ensure they meet the City’s requirements and accepted engineering principles.
  • Responsible for the construction administration of construction projects as assigned.
  • Possesses analytical skills to formulate engineering analyses and judgments while providing logical and thorough options to supervisors when necessary.
  • Possesses engineering technical skills to develop contract drawings and specifications while managing the design schedule and project budget.
  • Assists with building permit and community development plan review as assigned. Assists in developing and executing contracts for the annual street maintenance program for the entire City of Manhattan.

Performs additional duties as required.

  • Attends meetings and training.
  • Acts as a main contact point for outside groups and public agencies; answers questions and fulfill requests.
  • Handles stress from project deadlines and contributes extra effort as necessary.
  • Prepares report.
  • Maintains all records and documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, and procedures in all duties.

 

(Engineer II)

Summary/Objective

The Engineer II is responsible for preliminary engineering, contract drawing and specification development, project management, study and plan review as assigned.

(Engineer I)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Validated EIT Certification.
  • Valid driver’s license.

(Engineer II)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Validated EIT Certification.
  • Possession of a Professional Engineering (PE) license in the State of Kansas or in another state with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license in the State of Kansas within 6 months of hire into this position.
  • Four (4) years of design and/or project management experience of construction projects.
  • Valid driver’s license.
