ABOUT THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE (NAM)

ABOUT THE UNIT- HEALTH POLICY FELLOWSHIPS AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS 
As part of the NAM’s commitment to building leadership capacity across diverse disciplines to shape the future of health and medicine, the Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Programs (HPFLP) office administers a portfolio of highly regarded programs, including the RWJF Health Policy Fellows Program, NAM Fellowships for Health Science Scholars, the NAM Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence, and the NAM International Fellowships. 

These programs offer unique learning and leadership development opportunities for exceptional early- and mid-career professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills; expand their networks of leaders in health and medicine; contribute their expertise to help shape sound, evidence-based policies; and accelerate their career development. 

ABOUT THE POSITION 
The HPFLP team is looking for an Outreach and Engagement Specialist (OES) to play a pivotal role in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health Policy Fellows Program, which provides the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C. Under general guidance and direction from the Deputy Director of the RWJF Health Policy Fellows Program, the OES will manage two core program functions – recruitment outreach and alumni engagement. Two areas which have seen significant growth in the past few years. 

The OES will be responsible for developing and implementing a recruitment strategy to increase the visibility of the program among various communities within the health and medicine sphere. In addition, the OES is responsible for planning various activities and developing external communication and messages aimed at engaging the program alumni, program briefers, and partnering organizations. The OES will spearhead the development and revamp of the program website to coincide with the program’s 50th anniversary. 

The successful candidate will be well-versed in designing and developing different types of media such as newsletters, presentations, PowerPoints, and program informational one-pagers; and knowledgeable about the best way to use and boost the program presence on various social media platforms. In conjunction with the Deputy Director and team, the OES will create and design content for the program’s website and keep track of outreach and engagement metrics.

 

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

1. Communication, Dissemination, and Information Management:  Leads outreach and recruitment efforts to promote the programs via the development of electronic newsletters, social media, and website content and through outreach to partner organizations. Develop and maintain lists of key stakeholders for outreach and engagement. Explore and develop new ways to communicate program activities to potential applicants, alumni, and partner organizations. Creates and maintains materials, web sites, and social media channels to provide interest groups with information generated from and for activities. 

 

2. Stakeholder Engagement:  Communicates with fellows, program alumni, program briefers, sponsors, and other external stakeholders, answering questions and providing information. Respond to inquiries or information requests from applicants and alumni. Maintains an ongoing dialogue with outside audiences. Identifies engagement and partnership opportunities.  

 

3. Writing: Composes and edits a variety of print and web-based materials for use in the program’s outreach and engagement efforts. Develops persuasive content out of complex topics and issues. Responsible for the accuracy, and overall quality of all written communications.  

 

4. Event Planning and Management: Helps plan and execute alumni events and meetings. Coordinates messages, presentations and background materials. 

 

5. Digital Media: Utilizes social media to promote new initiatives and keeps current with industry/ business marketing trends. Creates content and coordinates the design of graphics for the website.  

 

6. Analysis: Gathers and analyze relevant data for the development of communication, outreach, and recruitment products and strategies. Monitors outreach and engagement efforts, reporting on progress. 

 

7. Strategy: Contributes to an internal and external communications strategy and program that keeps program alumni engaged with the fellowship and that reaches new and broader audiences for potential applicants. 

 

8. Teamwork: Builds relationships and networks across all levels of the organization including internal and external communications colleagues to identify communications opportunities and stories to increase engagement for program alumni.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

Experience on a communications team in a comparable organization, with direct responsibility for communications projects. 

Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills  

Strong project management skills and training, detail oriented and timely.  

Demonstrated ability to execute communication strategies and programs that are engaging and effective.  

Team-oriented, comfortable working with strong expert personalities and able to contribute through persuasion, executional skills, and quality of work.   

Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.  

Interest in working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness.  

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite. 

Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural team environment. Ability to make sound judgment and decision with supervisory consultation or by following procedures. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication.  

 

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field, or equivalent experience. 

 

Minimum Experience: Three years of related professional experience.  

 

Physical Capabilities:  Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. 

 

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:  None. 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Reports to the Deputy Director, RWJF Health Policy Fellows Program. 

 

Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 20%, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations. 

 

 Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $68,160 - $93,715. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.
