Bioinformatics Intern- Summer 2024

This is a 10 week Summer internship for 2024. Expected start date is late June 3rd through August 9th, 2024. This is a 40 hour/week- 100% remote.

Your Role:

The Omics and Machine Learning team at MilliporeSigma’s Research & Development group in Rockville, MD is providing a unique opportunity for individuals seeking hands-on experience in the dynamic fields of metagenomics, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics. The bioinformatics intern will be a vital member of the team, assisting in various projects around biosafety testing of novel biologics medication. The candidate should have strong coding skills (R and Python/Perl), experience with comparative genomics methods and concepts (e.g., BLAST, BWA, Bowtie, Average Nucleotide Identity) as well as good working knowledge of the Linux operating system and Docker.

The intern will play an essential role and contribute to development and implementation of novel bioinformatics algorithms and will have the opportunity to work on real-world problems. This bioinformatics internship is a perfect fit for someone who is highly motivated, eager to learn, and ready to bring their own innovative ideas to the forefront. The position not only offers the chance to collaborate with experienced professionals but also provides an opportunity to gain valuable biotech industry knowledge and insights.

 

Who You Are:

  • Programming requirements R, Python, OR Perl
  • Proficient with Linux operating system
  • Familiar with BLAST, BWA and/or Bowtie (at least one)
  • Nice to have: Software Version Control (Git, Bitbucket), Bioinformatics Databases (NCBI’s RefSeq, Genbank, SRA), and Comparative Genomics methods.
  • Undergraduate in the junior or senior year working towards degree in a Bioinformatics, Data Science, Computer Science orr related field
