2024 Summer Internship: Education Intern

The United Nations Association of Greater Boston (UNAGB) is seeking 10 Education Interns looking to share their passion for civic empowerment, and global affairs through youth programming and teaching, by joining us as we launch our annual Summer Institute in Global Leadership - a series of week-long programs for middle and high school students. 

A summer internship at UNAGB will show you how globally focused educational programming is designed and implemented in real time, and provide you with hands-on experience in developing curricular content and direct instruction in classrooms at Boston’s top universities.

UNAGB’s mission is to build a strong multigenerational network of global citizens. We educate, inspire, and engage members of the community on critical global issues central to the work and mission of the United Nations. We envision a Greater Boston where people of all ages engage as global citizens in working towards a more sustainable, just, and peaceful future.

As a member of the UNAGB team, interns should expect to contribute their leadership and enthusiasm to this mission with the ultimate goal of introducing Boston-area middle and high school students to the core principles of Model UN, to cultivate a passion for global affairs and conflict resolution, as well as key negotiation and public speaking skills.
 

The Work: Interns will engage in the following activities:

  • Teach middle and high school students using UNAGB’s skills-based curriculum
  • Facilitate conference committee rooms as MUN co-chairs
  • Mentor and oversee students in team building and research & writing
  • Research and write topical materials for student use on global issues
  • General admin & communications tasks: marketing and outreach for Summer Institute

Qualifications and Requirements: Ideal candidates are/have: 

  • Passionate about global issues and community development
  • Exceptionally strong communication, research, and writing skills required
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, organized, and punctual
  • Collaborative and experienced in working with teams in both in personal and remote settings
  • Completed relevant coursework and/or has significant life experience in; international relations, economics, history, political science, journalism, education, or a related field
  • Model UN, Model Congress, or Speech & Debate experience is a plus!

Dates, Times, Location: Interns are asked to: 

  • Commit to a minimum of 9 weeks between June 3 and August 16 (not required to be consecutive)
  • Commit to 16-24 hours a week during non-Summer Institute weeks
  • Commit to a minimum of 21 hours a week during Summer Institute weeks (preference for candidates who can work 8am - 3pm for 3-5 days per week)

This is an in person internship

  • UNAGB offices are located near North Station, Boston, MA
  • Summer Institute takes place in various locations in the Boston metro area including:
    • Perennial Location: Harvard Business School
    • Previous Summer Locations: Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, MIT Sloan, Harvard Kennedy School, WGBH, The Foundry
  • A flat transportation stipend of $250 will be provided for interns to use as they see fit

Additional Opportunities

  • All interns are encouraged, but not required, to become UNA-USA members - free for young professionals, between 18-26 (https://unausa.org/join/membership/); UNAGB staff will recommend/serve as a reference for future leadership positions with UNA-USA opportunities
  • All interns are invited to join the UNAGB network of interns and staff alumni via a private LinkedIn community of other professionals who have also volunteered and worked for UNAGB. UNABG staff actively curate this community and share/encourage the sharing of job opportunities related to international relations and the local diplomatic community.
  • All interns are encouraged (but not required) to attend UNAGB’s community-focused events. Interns that leave in good standing will be recognized as Staff Alumni at all UNAGB events.

  • Training and Preparation for Summer Institute Program (Research and Writing )
  • June 17 - 21:  Summer Institute: Human Rights
  • June 24 - June 28: Summer Institute: Global Health

July 

  • July 8 - 12: Summer Institute: Women in Leadership
  • July 15 - 19: Summer Institute: International Security
  • July 22 - July 26: Summer Institute: Advanced Public Speaking / Wildlife Conservation (Two Concurrent Programs)
  • July 29 - August 2: Summer Institute: Emerging Technologies and the SDGs

August 

  • August 5 - 9: Summer Institute: Climate Resilience - Responding to Natural Disasters
  • August 12 - 16: Summer Institute Wrap Up and Debrief

 

This internship is unpaid. UNAGB will work with interns who engage with university programs to ensure they fulfill fellowship or scholarship criteria, as available. Applicants are responsible for seeking out these opportunities and communicating any program requirements to UNAGB.
