ESL Teacher - Bilingual Preferred

Qualifications: 

1. Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with endorsement in English Language Learner teaching 

2. Has demonstrated ability to teach and deal professionally and effectively with students as shown by student teaching record and evidence of successful teaching experience 

3. Personal qualities necessary for development of an effective professional relationship with students, colleagues, administrative and supervisory staff and parents 

4. Foreign language fluency preferred 

5. Prior teaching experience in English Language Learner Programs preferred 

 

Terms of Employment:  Nine (9) month Teacher Contract 

 

Responsibilities: 

1. Actively support the mission of the school and district. 

2. Utilize conscious engagement regarding equity, diversity and inclusion. 

3. Represent the Harlem Consolidated School District in a professional manner. 

 

Duties: 

1. Accelerate the learning of English and the academic content and content language of the District's curriculum. Serve as a liaison between the English language learning student and their families and the schools and classroom teachers. Implement English Language Learner (ELL) Programs and procedures in compliance with District, state and federal requirements. Provide leadership and consultation as the second language expert to all staff in the District schools. 

2. Assess students for ELL Program eligibility and maintain appropriate and required documentation on every ELL student. 

3. Implement all the procedures of the ELL Program as prescribed by District curriculum and state and federal regulations. 

4. Make recommendations to teaching staff and administration about the types of accommodations, adaptation, special resources, courses, classes, and classroom adjustments that are appropriate for each ELL student. 

5. Make recommendations about the appropriate accommodations for District, state and federal assessments by convening a Review Committee or otherwise and communicating those recommendations to parents and staff. 

6. Serve as a second language consultant to school staff by maintaining a high knowledge base of the latest research, laws, most effective practices, and issues in the field. 

7. Serve as a liaison between the ELL student, his/her family and the school, especially with respect to cultural and language differences, and providing cross-cultural information to all parties that foster positive relationships. 

8. In consultation and partnership with other teachers, provide rigorous and age/developmentally appropriate instruction to ELL students that support the acceleration of English and appropriate academic content and is aligned with District curriculum. 

9. Monitor ELL students' progress in all aspects of his/her academic schedule and their participation in all school activities and programs and promote and advocate for their participation as appropriate. 

10. In consultation with professional development coordinator, provide ongoing staff development on second language acquisition and acculturation processes, sheltered instruction, the latest research, and most effective practices in teaching English Language Learners. 

11. Serve as a consultant for purposes of referrals to other programs such as Title I, Special Education, Gifted and Talented and others. 

12. Participate in intra-school staff development opportunities that enhance the knowledge of the mainstream curriculum and issues in order to know how those relate to ELL and how to adapt or incorporate them into ELL instruction. 

13. Participate in all meetings within a school where representation of ELL is needed and appropriate such as school councils, grade level, mapping, multicultural and others. 

14. Participate in school division level staff development meetings and workshops relevant to ELL programming in order to be connected to and knowledgeable of the most current trends, practices and procedures. 

15. Maintain ongoing communication with parents and the families of ELL students in a meaningful way which may require the use of interpreters and translators. 

16. Maintain on-going communication with all teachers of ELL students and maintain a positive, nurturing, collaborative and consultative-type relationship. 

17. Stimulate student growth in the assimilation of facts, problem-solving, and learning skills and engage each student in the learning process. 

18. Maintain a system of classroom control providing for the mental and physical well-being of all students. 

19. Supervise and coordinate the work of assigned ELL Para Educators and assistants as assigned. 

20. Keep current with best practices and requirements as they relate to your job assignment. 

21. Perform such other job related duties and assume such other professional responsibilities as your supervisor may from time to time assign or delegate.
