Bioinformatics Internship, Machine Learning I

Summary of Internship

The Bioinformatics Internship position provides an opportunity for students who are currently pursuing a computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, or similar degree to get hands on experience working with bioinformatics scientists in a fast-paced research and development environment. The bioinformatics intern will contribute to the development and testing of a machine learning model to predict the performance of probesets on genotyping array. The position starts in May, paid working 40 hours per week through August.

 

The internship program offers participants an outstanding chance to create results, quickly gain credibility and develop a strong company network.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect, preprocess, and merge data from difference sources
  • Identify thermodynamics features that could affect probeset performance
  • Optimize and test performance of the machine learning model
  • Perform statistical analyses and interpret the results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be pursuing a degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field
  • Proficient in Python or SQL
  • Experience with UNIX/Linux environment
  • Familiar with fundamental processes involved in machine learning
  • Must have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated with a positive attitude

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with sklearn or tensorflow
  • Experience with SVM, random forest, CNN or other commonly used machine learn models.
  • Knowledge in DNA thermodynamics is desired
  • Experience with academic research or a demonstrated ability to read and understand scientific literature.
  • Familiar with Perl

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in California is $14.75–$45.75.
