Organic Synthetic Chemistry Summer Intern

Location/Division Specific Information

Thermo Fisher is seeking a highly motivated summer intern for the Organic and Oligo Chemistry R&D group. The focus of our group is providing research reagents as tools for genetic analysis for the Life Sciences including reagents, protocols and instruments.

This research project is for discovery of useful fluorescent dyes used in qPCR.

 

A Day in the Life:

Our R&D summer interns typically work on a self-contained research and development project. The R&D intern is a fully integrated member of our R&D group and participates in all activities such as research presentations and group meetings. They have their own cubicle desk and bench space in the laboratory. They also have full access to the excellent resources that are available to employees of a large company like Thermo Fisher such as online R&D library, corporate network and laboratory equipment. As typical for industrial R&D scientists, time on any typical day will be split between the research of chemical literature and patents, planning of experiments, laboratory work (including synthesis, analysis, and purification methods), data analysis, lab notebook documentation, review of the results and summarizing the results in presentations.

At the beginning of the internship the intern will receive detailed guidance from their mentor on the background of the project, assays and technology that will be used, use of laboratory equipment and suggestions on how the question at hand might be addressed efficiently. Weekly one-on-one meetings with the project mentor offer opportunity to address general and project-related questions, review progress and plan next steps.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Student currently enrolled in classes leading to an accredited bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry.

 

 

Experience

  • Preferred majors: Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biochemistry.
  • Sophomore organic chemistry with lab preferred.
  • Strong desire and motivation to develop a career in research and development.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

·The successful candidate will have some prior experience in a wet chemistry laboratory.

 

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Daily work in laboratory performing organic and analytical chemistry.
  • Daily adherence to all safety protocols.
  • Ability to work safely with chemicals

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in California is $14.75–$45.75.
