Richard III Directing Shadow

POSITION OVERVIEW

Chicago Shakespeare Theater is engaging an individual to shadow Artistic Director, Edward Hall, as he directs our upcoming production of Richard III. The rehearsal process begins on December 29, 2023, and runs through Opening on February 9, 2024. The Directing Shadow will be mentored by and have the opportunity to support the Director throughout the rehearsal process.

If you have an interest in the theater making process, how a production comes together, and directing Shakespeare, this is an opportunity for you!

This shadowing opportunity is ideally suited for aspiring directors at the start or early on in their careers seeking immersion, experience, and mentorship in directing for a not-for-profit institution.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater is particularly interested to hear from individuals with an interest in directing who have had limited access to arts opportunities in the past, as we are committed to removing barriers which may exclude some people from accessing opportunities in theatre.

PAY: $500 weekly stipend

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: December 29, 2023, through February 9, 2024

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Be mentored by CST’s Artistic Director and Richard III director, Edward Hall
  • Follow the production in rehearsals to absorb and gain an insight into the director’s process as well as the process of putting together a production
  • Constructively communicate thoughts and ideas to the Director when appropriate
  • Observe Shakespeare verse work process with Actors
  • Learn about working with creative teams, actors, and the wider technical teams to put a production together
  • Attend rehearsals and debrief with the Director at the end of the rehearsal process
  • Shadow artistic director on a variety of meetings

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HOURS

  • Rehearsal schedule hours are generally from 10:00am to 6:00pm Tuesday through Sunday
  • Worksite is at the CST facilities on Navy Pier in Chicago, IL

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completed or working towards a degree in Theater with a focus in Directing
  • At least one year of directing exposure in a collegiate setting or above

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 which means 14 days has passed since obtaining 2 doses of a primary series with Pfizer, Moderna, or Novavax or a single dose of Johnson & Johnson. Proof of vaccination must be provided before beginning work with Chicago Shakespeare Theater or a request for a qualifying exemption must be submitted and approved prior to beginning work.
