Contracted Student Interns - (23000BJJ)

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.  

 

The Duration of this internship is January 2024 – May 2024

 

Waterways 

 

Duties will include:  (a) Work with the Program's Assistant Director to (a) review and correct application-specific Waterways data maintained in the ACCELA/EIPAS central electronic permitting portal for QA/QC purposes, (b) revise internal and public-facing instructions, guidance, etc., as directed, to reflect recently completed system updates, and (c) assist the Assistant Director in implementing specific work-flow related tasks selected to improve compliance with regulatory timeframes.

"•    Work with the Waterways Team to update an existing detailed inventory of public access and public amenity requirements for licensed projects, primarily along the Boston waterfront. 
•    Visit selected licensed mixed-use projects to document compliance or non-compliance with public access and/or public amenity requirements assisting the program enforcement of these licenses.
•    Work with the Waterways Team to advance an existing inventory of docks on non-tidal waters supporting an ongoing development and refinement of the programs digital licensing database.
•    Document the results of efforts to facilitate the long-term utility of the information developed during the internship.
•    Complete self-managed projects and deliverables to support the Program’s initiatives described above."

 

Qualifications

 

 

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

 

 Preferred Qualifications.

 •    Interest in learning to read engineering and architectural plans, interpret regulations, Chapter 91 licenses and related Management Plans;

•    Ability to communicate clearly in written and oral form;  

•    Interest in state and local environmental laws regulations including Waterways (310 CMR 9.00) and Wetlands (310 CMR 10.00); ‘

•    General knowledge of GIS, Excel and database skills helpful;  

  •    General knowledge of engineering and scientific concepts and terminology, with preferred experience in environmental and/or marine structural engineering, 

•    Work well independently and as a member of a team. Recognize importance of maintaining regular communication with supervisor on the status of assigned projects.
