Are you ready to be a lifeline in times of need? The City of San Diego Police and Fire-Rescue Departments are seeking talented individuals to join our team as Dispatcher II. As a Dispatcher II, you will be at the forefront of emergency response, providing crucial support during 911 and non-emergency calls within the City of San Diego and neighboring areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to respond to emergency calls
- Gather essential incident information from callers
- Determine the nature, priority, and response requirements for each call
- Enter accurate information using a computer keyboard
- Answer inquiries and direct non-dispatch calls to the appropriate departments
- Perform additional assigned duties as needed
Notes for Prospective Employees:
- Scheduled wage increases, including special salary increases
- Eligible employees hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS)
- Dispatcher II roles may involve sitting for extended periods and answering a high volume of calls
- Dispatcher II employees may be required to work on City holidays and may receive additional pay for unusual shifts
Police Department Dispatcher II Notes:
- Starting hourly rate: $27.96
- Obtain a California P.O.S.T. Basic Dispatcher Course Certificate within one year of hire
- Additional pay for employees with a California P.O.S.T. Basic Dispatcher Course Certificate
- Special assignment pay for those assigned as operators in the 911 Police Department Phone Room
- Work a four-day, ten-hour shift with three consecutive days off
- May be required to work overtime
Fire-Rescue Department Dispatcher II Notes:
- Work 12-hour shifts (44/36 rotation schedule)
- Potential overtime during training and for cleared positions
- Eligible for 17.5% additional pay upon completing the paid Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification course
- Mandated overtime may be required beyond scheduled shifts to maintain staffing levels
REQUIREMENTS:
CITIZENSHIP:
- Citizenship: United States citizen or legal right to work in the United States
EDUCATION: Choose ONE of the following options:
- High school graduation
- G.E.D. test passage
- C.H.S.P.E. passage
- Two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from a college or university
EXPERIENCE: Choose ONE of the following options:
- Six months of prior experience as a Dispatcher I or Dispatcher II with the City of San Diego.
- One year of experience as a Dispatcher in a law enforcement agency or fire department.
- One year of experience as a Dispatcher performing emergency dispatch for a medical transport company or department.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE:
- Proficiency in Spanish, Korean, Arabic, Farsi, Somali, Chinese, Indochinese, or Tagalog
