Summer Teacher

Core teachers at The Quad Manhattan Summer Program are trained by highly developed experts in the fields of education and psychology through the spring session leading to a rewarding and fun summer with twice-exceptional students; students who are gifted and also have learning differences. 

Only teachers with special education, gifted education, speech and language, social work, occupational therapy, psychology and/or related field background may apply. Core teachers plan and implement two psycho-social skill building lessons per day that are adapted to meet the interests and needs of each student in their class. 

Class size is no more than ten children and each group has at least three staff members: one core teacher and two psycho-social interns. You must be available for 7 weeks' full time work. There will be a few flexible training sessions before camp to prepare lessons and create materials, and part-time day and evening training in the two weeks prior to program start. This position is ideal for candidates who are working in schools, have the summers off, and have the curiosity and desire to learn about the twice-exceptional population. 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement daily psycho-social lessons for your core class
  • Participate in mandatory training and supervision on an ongoing basis. 
  • Facilitate daily team meetings with two psycho-social interns in your core regarding curriculum updates and daily debriefs (rounds)
  • Attend regular group and individual supervision with camp director or senior core teacher for curriculum development prior to program start, and during the program (3-5 PM) as needed (at least once per week)
  • Attend regular group supervision with supervising psychologist and clinical team (OTs, SLPs, Counselors) at psycho-social meetings (3-5 PM) twice per week
  • Set up classroom under direct supervision of executive functioning experts
  • Maintain an organized inventory and materials requests 
  • Check in students daily, keeping a record of daily attendance of students and interns
  • Maintain relationships with parents by writing a weekly take-home newsletter for parents that includes the techniques learned at the summer program that can be modified for home with specific instructions, due to the camp director by Thursday each week.
  • Plan four (4) field trips for the summer, budgeting an appropriate amount for your core. Field trips should be core curriculum-based and approved by the director.
  • Review and become extremely familiar with all student record paperwork and releases prior to the start of the program.
  • Communicate with all families, providers, and staff via The Quad Manhattan email address ONLY
  • Supervise, follow, and aid students through written schedules for your core and implement breaks accordingly
  • Support interns, and staff by implementing the Bully Prevention Protocol to students as needed and record all reportable "incidents."
  • Co-Plan, supervise, and facilitate spirit activities including the carnival and OlympSTIC ceremonies and events
  • Provide 1:1 tutoring one (1) hour per week after program hours (3-5:30 PM) as needed and at your acceptance. Additional tutoring hours at your acceptance may be billed at a rate of $50/hour.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years' teaching experience or one year Quad Manhattan experience + Bachelor’s in a related field (education, psychology, speech and language therapy, social work, etc.)
  • Professional licensure or near-completion certificate/masters in a related field such as:
    • Teaching Certificate (Grades K-12)--all combinations are considered
    • Master’s in Mental Health Counseling
    • Speech and Language Therapy (CCC-SLP)
    • OTR/L
    • MSW, MCSW
    • PsyD
    • Certificate in Meeting the Needs of Twice Exceptional Learners (from Quad Foundation)
  • Enthusiasm for learning and twice-exceptionality
  • Classroom leadership experience
  • Preferred: experience with twice-exceptional learners, gifted learners, psychology, and/or special education background
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and organizational skills
  • Flexibility
  • Team player

Dates & Compensation

  • Must be available to work 5 days per week, June 24, 2024-June 28, 2024 (Program setup) and July 1, 2024-August 9, 2024 from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to work EVERY DAY for seven weeks. No exceptions can be made. July 4 unpaid holiday/day off.
  • Starting Salary: $1,150 per week*
