MIT Beaver Works - RACECAR Teaching Assistant

MIT Beaver Works is seeking summer interns to contribute to the Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) RACECAR program.  BWSI is a world class educational outreach program that challenges high school students across the country to develop robust unmanned systems using state-of-the-art autonomy algorithms and sensors. For more information on BWSI program visit: https://beaverworks.ll.mit.edu/CMS/bw/bwsi.

This hire will have to be in-person at MIT. TA’s will spend at minimum two weeks completing training and learning prerequisite material for the course and then four weeks co-instructing the courses alongside Lincoln Laboratory and DRAPER staff working with students in person at MIT campus.

Tasks for BWSI RACECAR program include the following:

  • Embedded software development to support control and autonomy solutions for RACECAR platforms
  • Development of novel sensor control interfaces and optimization algorithms for completing real-world autonomy problems
  • Co-instruction of college-level course material to top high school students across the nation
  • Debugging and troubleshooting hardware and student-made software

Position Requirements:

  • Current undergraduate students in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or other technical field, coupled with the demonstrated ability to apply talents to new fields.
  • Demonstrate excellence in communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts in a concise manner to a wide spectrum of audiences
  • Interest in autonomous systems, course development, and educational instruction.
  • Ability to rapidly assess technical situations and faults and to develop practical solutions
  • The program runs from July 8th to August 4th 2024, Monday to Friday, from 9AM to 5PM at and is being held in-person. Housing or relocation is not provided.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in the Python programming language, ROS2 framework, and Git
  • Exposure to image processing fundamentals, Computer Vision and OpenCV.
  • Exposure to Linux, Bash, file transfer & communication protocols, and embedded systems
  • Exposure to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence concepts
