****The Role****

Put simply, data scientists at Up&Up solve the hardest problems in the business by whatever means get the job done most effectively. You’ll use data to quickly diagnose these problems, design and implement tailored solutions, and measure their immediate impact.

This is not your typical big tech data science role - as a Data Scientist at Up&Up, you’ll be expected to own the solution to the most impactful problems in the business end to end, acting as your own engineer, PM, designer, and software architect.

By owning problems end to end, data scientists at Up&Up have an unprecedented opportunity to grow quickly with the company and lead mission critical parts of the business. Job Description:

  • Own the most impactful and challenging problems in the business from end to end
  • Build statistical models and machine learning algorithms that provide unique business insights and deliver outsize value
  • Design and execute thoughtful, data driven experiments to validate potential solutions
  • Make intelligent and pragmatic technical trade-offs in the service of getting results quickly
  • Explore and implement new ways to deliver on our mission of building a fairer way to rent
  • Work side by side with our Operations, Finance and Real Estate teams to shine a fresh, data driven light on their biggest pain points

 

Qualifications

We’re looking for candidates who have the following:

  • Experience converting large, potential messy datasets into clear insights and action items
  • Ability to rapidly diagnose and structure large, ambiguous problems
  • Solid programming foundations, ideally in Python and/or NodeJS/Typescript
  • A keen sense of the balance between technical complexity, first principles thinking, and implementation cost that best solves the problem at hand
  • A broad understanding of advances across the field of data science
  • Learn quickly and are comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Understand that great data science is a means to deliver innovative, world class products for our customers - the customer always comes first
  • Comfortable joining an in-person first culture (our office is located in Brooklyn, NYC)
  • Care more about getting to the truth than being right
  • Are unreasonably ambitious and excited to build something new
  • Are kind, positive, and optimistic
  • Love to proactively help/teach their teammates

 

Also nice to have:

(Note: We are more interested in growth potential than prior experience for this role, so don't worry if you don't fulfill all (or any) of these additional criteria)

  • Prior research or professional experience with machine learning and statistical modeling techniques
  • Experience with data visualization, designing insightful dashboards
  • Experience deploying and operationalizing machine learning algorithms for production
  • Experience incorporating Large Language Models into operational and technical workflows
  • Experience with data engineering and infrastructure (e.g. Airflow, Luigi, Apache Beam, etc.)
  • Experience with geospatial modeling and visualization techniques (e.g. spatial autocorrelation, spatial regression methods, etc)
  • Experience architecting and building large scale, mission critical technical systems
  • Experience with a lower level programming language such as C/C++/Java
  • Experience with the Google Cloud Platform
