Plant Technician II

The City of San Diego offers a unique opportunity to join our team as a Plant Technician II. You will be at the forefront of preserving our precious water resources by maintaining and repairing essential machinery and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance, overhaul, repair, and installation of water/wastewater treatment plant and pump station machinery and equipment
  • Work with air compressors, high-pressure hydraulic systems, pumps, piping systems, chemical feed equipment, boilers, heat exchangers, and engines
  • Install and align heavy motors and equipment
  • Provide training to others
  • Maintain records, complete forms, and reports
  • Perform additional assigned duties as required

Notes for Prospective Employees:

  • Scheduled wage increases, including special salary increases
  • Clean-shaven appearance required
  • Must pass a respirator fit-test for confined spaces or environments containing chlorine, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), or methane
  • Potential for overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Exposure to noxious chemicals and hazardous substances
  • Confined space entry certification is required within one year of hire
  • Potential for on-call duty with additional pay
  • Work may involve sewerage or chlorine environments, heights, tanks, channels, and confined spaces

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience: Two years of full-time experience maintaining, overhauling, repairing, and installing mechanical equipment at a water treatment facility, wastewater facility, major pump station, or industrial processing facility employing similar technology. Qualifying experience MUST include working on pumps, valves, and/or piping systems. (Preventive maintenance work alone is NOT qualifying.)
  • License: A valid California Class C Driver's License is required at the time of hire

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Experience with dewatering centrifuges, compressors, gear drive units/speed reducers, chemical feeders, small gasoline/diesel engines, and blowers
  • Training in Predictive Maintenance Technologies
  • Experience with computer programs/software
  • California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Plant Maintenance Mechanical Technologist Grade II or higher certification
  • Knowledge of machinery alignment protocol
