Swim Lesson Supervisor

Distinguishing Features of the Class

Oversees the aquatic center swim lesson program. Supervises Swim Lesson Instructors. Utilizes safety/first aid equipment, computer, water test kit and cash register.

Positions are available at the following aquatic centers and pools: Ashworth; Birdland; Nahas; Northwest and Teachout.

Approximate employment durationUp to 40 hours per week.  Appointments are May until August.

Paid TrainingPools will begin to open May 25, 2024 with paid training and setup beginning May 13, 2024 for staff who are cleared to work.

Note Hiring preference is given to applicants having the ability to work consistently throughout the season. 

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Must be at least 18 years old;
  • Prior Lifeguard or Swimming Instructor experience preferred.

 

Required Special Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
    • If possess an out-of-state Driver's License, submittal of driving records is required.  Please submit to the City of Des Moines Human Resources Department; electronically to humanresources@dmgov.org, by fax to 515-237-1680, or by mail to 1551 E MLK Jr Pkwy, Des Moines, IA 50317 at the time of application.
  • Candidates are required to possess a valid and current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification through the American Red Cross or have the ability to obtain required certifications by employment start date.
    • Certifications may be obtained through the American Red Cross and must be valid through September 02, 2024.
  • Requires satisfactory criminal, sex offender and driving record background checks.

If you have current certifications such as American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, AED, First Aid, WSI, etc., please attach these to your application.

 

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Assists in the training and orientation of swim lesson staff;
  • Schedules swim lesson staff;
  • Oversees swim lessons and ensures that students are taught according to the American Red Cross standards;
  • Acts as the primary contact at the aquatic center for swim lessons;
  • Performs water quality tests, record results, reports any water clarity problems and/or alarms to maintenance;
  • Recognizes potentially hazardous conditions and intercedes to correct such conditions;
  • Enforces rules governing the conduct of persons at swimming pools.;
  • Supervises the cleaning of pools and restrooms;
  • Confirms swim lesson staff time sheets weekly;
  • Inventory and distribute swim lesson cards to participants;
  • Performs other related work as required.
