Director, Athletics

The Director of Athletics reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs and is responsible for comprehensive athletics, physical education and recreation department. The Director of Athletics must understand and promote the mission, goals, values and educational ideals of Brandeis University, as well as the mission of the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation. The Director of Athletics is responsible for abiding by and implementing all conference, NCAA and university policies and for developing an inclusive program in which students learn, play and compete.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs a department which includes nineteen varsity athletic teams, undergraduate degree required Mind and Body Balance offerings, and a comprehensive recreation program including general fitness, aquatics, and intramural and club sports opportunities. Provide leadership for an intercollegiate athletics program that competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the University Athletic Association.
  • Supervises a staff of approximately 40 members consisting of coaches, administrators, Health, Wellness and Life Skills instructors and sports performance professionals (athletic trainers/strength and conditioning personnel) including conducting regular performance evaluations, mentoring and hiring new staff when necessary.
  • Directs the department’s fundraising efforts through the Friends of Brandeis Athletics (FOBA) and by working in conjunction with Institutional Advancement to build alumni/friend support of the department. Collaborate with divisional colleagues to pursue Health and Wellness related grant opportunities.
  • Develops and implements strategic plans and budgeting strategies for the department which includes setting department priorities and policies, implementing a budget, overseeing capital improvement projects and making recommendations for the future direction of the department.
  • Manages student-athlete recruitment for the department. Working with the Office of Admissions to enroll diverse, athletically and academically talented student-athletes that contribute to the mission of the department and the University.
  • Responsible for representing the department through campus-wide committees, through the University Athletic Association, as a member of the NCAA and with external constituencies as appropriate.

 

Education, Experience, and additional qualifications

 

B.A./B.S. required. M.A/M.S. preferred.

Work Experience: 8+ years; 5-8 years supervisory/management experience

Prior intercollegiate athletics administrative experience required. Knowledge and insight into the issues confronting higher education in general, as well as NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
