Digital Media Internship

GENERAL SUMMARY:  The Digital Media Intern will focus on assisting Media Services with the curation of digital content and projects that creatively tell the stories within the City of Dubuque. Assignments will vary based on need and opportunity but may include videography, photography, social media content development, editing, and motion graphics. Helping gather footage and photos that feature city related services and events will be a main responsibility of this role.

 Additionally, the intern will showcase the vast reach of city services by helping Media Services craft engaging content and communication tools that will be featured on city social media pages and CityChannel Dubuque, the city’s public access channel. From arts to major infrastructure projects, this role will have the opportunity to explore the many aspects of city government through a lens.

*This summer position will have the opportunity to work 40 hours per week for 12 weeks.*

TEAM BACKGROUND:

The Digital Media Intern will serve as a highly valued member of the Media Services team and work closely with the city’s Multimedia Specialist and Video Producer.

Media Services is a branch of the City’s Public Information Office (PIO) and oversees the operations and production of video content, digital photography, live City Council meetings, and more. The department’s mission is to increase awareness and understanding of city services and programs and facilitate increased transparency of Dubuque city government to promote resident and stakeholder trust and satisfaction.

The goal of this internship is to support Media Services in developing engaging visual content that enhances digital productions, while gaining experience and skills in a government setting. 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Lead video and photo shoots that will assist in growing Media Services’ content library
  • Conduct interviews with city staff and community members
  • Plan and develop strategies to drive engagement using digital content
  • Edit video and photo projects with broadcast and social media audiences in mind
  • Organize and log incoming digital content
  • Assist with live multi-camera event productions
  • Other creative duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Communications and Media - Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media. Experience editing video content using Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop. Experience shooting video and photos with Sony Alpha A7s III cameras or other digital SLR cameras. Interest in modern communication tools that inspire public engagement
  • Sales and Marketing - Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics.
  • Customer Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Originality and Fluency of Ideas - Creating new and original ideas. Coming up with lots of ideas. Ability to think creatively and approach assignments innovatively.
  • Detail-oriented and able to accurately meet and communicate about deadlines.
  • Active Listening and Speaking - Listening to others, not interrupting, and asking good questions. Talking to others. Comfortable engaging with and interviewing other City staff and members of the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • By start date, completion of two years of a multimedia, video production, or communications program
  • Experience shooting and editing video
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility
