The Legal Aid Society advances its mission through rigorous client representation in a myriad of courts, community education, class action and impact litigation, and systemic law and policy reform.

 

The Legal Aid Society’s Communications Department as an immediate opening for a Communications Intern to support efforts, to inform, influence, and engage our staff across various departments and offices in New York City. They will assist with public relations and external communications.

 

The Communications Department leads Legal Aid’s growing media relations, marketing, branding, and design needs on earned, owned, and paid media channels. They tell the stories of our clients and supporters, develops educational and advocacy campaigns, and highlights our legal and advocacy victories.

 

Duration of internship: June 3 - August 16

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

This is an ideal opportunity for a student seeking experience in fundamental communication strategies such as media relations, audience research and channel management. 

 

The intern will learn how to use human-centric strategic and design thinking to reach an internal and external audiences. They will also get to create content and experiences that connect the public and Legal Aid staff to our mission, values, and each other.  Duties include:

 

  • Content creation - Contribute to the development of written and multimedia content for various channels (e.g., press releases, pitches, Intranet news and resource sites, signage, events, etc.), leveraging our brand and style guidelines
  • Media Relations – Monitor daily media to track important breaking industry stories and alert key stakeholders accordingly; Maintain media lists and administrative databases 
  • Event coordination - Assist with the planning and production of internal events for celebration, recognition, learning, and team-building
  • Process and planning optimization - Support the maintenance of a robust org-wide content calendar and proactively seek ways to improve our service to our people
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

 

  • Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program (preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, Marketing, Design, or a related field of study)
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
  • Acts with high degree of compassion, integrity, and open-mindedness 
  • Basic understanding of user experience, storytelling, and brand/voice principles
  • Creative thinker with ability to ideate and pitch compelling, intentional content
  • Proven time-management and organizational skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and familiar with content and collaboration tools
  • Possesses a growth mindset and openness to learning new skills and approaches
  • Comfortable with navigating ambiguity and complexity
  • Proficiency in visual/graphic design, photography, and/or videography a plus
