System Engineer Intern

The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for a Systems Engineer Intern that wants to spend their 2024 summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 12-weeks.  

 

Cohort 1: May 20th through August 12th

Cohort 2: June 17th through September 9th

 

This Intern will be onsite in Rochester, NY.

 

The Responsibilities

  • Gaining familiarity with various photon-based assay measurement systems
  • Assisting in design and integration of prototype hardware, including optical design, system set up, alignment, and control.
  • Identifying appropriate system attributes (e.g.: resolution, field of view, sensitivity) and designing tests to confirm those attributes.
  • Planning and executing experiments to test the prototype hardware on both synthetic and biological samples.
  • Analyzing data, preparing written summaries of experiments and other work products, and presenting results to cross-functional teams.
  • Providing technical support to other team members on troubleshooting, use of prototype instrument, etc.
  • Maintaining excellent documentation practices, including laboratory notes, well-commented code, etc.
  • Supporting other goals on the next generation program as needed.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

 

The Individual

 

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Field of Study: Physics, Optics, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in the Fall Semester 2024 at an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0 or higher.
  • Able to start on either May 20th or June 17th.
  • Ability to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.
  • Ability to work with a team to solve problems.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technical concepts as needed.
  • Ability to work hands on and independently on one or more objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • General knowledge of technical fields including physics, optics, and statistics.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred:

  • Rising Junior or Senior at an accredited university or college.
  • Experience using LabVIEW.
  • General computer programming, particularly MATLAB or python.
  • Experience with Optical Simulation Software.

 

 

The Work Environment

No strenuous physical activity, though occasional light lifting of files and related materials is required. 30% of time in meetings, working with team, or talking on the phone, 70% of the time at the desk on computer, doing analytical work.

 

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
