Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and, ultimately, in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families, and high school students from families in Upward Bound aim for a bachelor's degree. Upward Bound aims to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. The Upward Bound Math/Science program, while holding to the guidelines and principles of Upward Bound, provides an extra focus on introducing and immersing students in the STEM fields by providing summer research opportunities and career exploration within the STEM fields. We are looking to fill four part-time Tutor Counselor positions. 

The Tutor/Counselor (TC) is responsible for the well-being of Upward Bound students. Counseling, academic tutoring, and various types of supervision are all facets of this responsibility. For six weeks, except for weekends, the TC is expected to keep close contact with the students in all aspects of community life. The Tutor Counselor (TC) will work among students and take on the roles of teaching assistant, tutor, and residential assistant.  The TC enforces program rules and codes of behavior and is expected to respond to disturbances in class and during program activities. TCs should report serious breaches of program rules to the proper administrator. The dates for mandatory training will be Wednesday, May 29-Friday, May 31, 2024. The tentative dates for the program are Sunday, June 2-Saturday, July 13, 2024.  Part-time TCs will work up to 6 hours a day, four days a week at a rate of $10.50/hour. 

     

TUTOR/COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 

▪ Assist Instructor with supplemental preparation for class 

▪ Assist Instructor with daily classroom activities 

▪ Attend all study hall periods 

▪ Assist students in a specified area during the study hall period 

▪ Supervise students in the dormitory and classroom

▪ Attend all residential staff meetings 

▪ Assist the program with ongoing activities and programs outside the classroom 

▪ Attend all staff meetings 

▪ Assist with programmatic duties as assigned by the Program Staff 

                                                               

                                                                  QUALIFICATIONS 

• Minimum – Upper-level academically successful college student (at least 45 credits earned) 

• Knowledge of one or more of the following subjects: Foreign Language (Spanish and French), Science (up to Physics), English/Composition (Grammar, Syntax), or Math (up to Calculus) 

• Interest and willingness to work with adolescents from different backgrounds 

• Interpersonal skills, sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged, and commitment to the goals of Upward Bound 

• Intangible traits such as initiative, reliability, flexibility, effective communication, trustworthiness, motivation, leadership qualities, and a positive attitude
