The Independent Schools Teaching Fellowship provides a practical and academic learning experience to recent college graduates or alumni interested in a teaching experience at an independent boarding school. Teaching Fellows fully immerse themselves in the boarding school experience by teaching classes, contributing to the extracurricular life of the school, and living in a dormitory. Teaching Fellowships are two-year appointments.

Teaching Fellows are placed with a mentor to guide them through their first year of teaching, coaching, and residential responsibilities. They are also enrolled in a two-year Master of Arts in Teaching program offered through the Independent Schools Teacher Leadership Program at Mount Holyoke College. This specialized course of study is designed for full-time educators working in independent schools who want to enhance their teaching and/or prepare for leadership roles.

With the support of mentors and the coursework, Teaching Fellows learn how to develop curricula, effectively engage students, and be a good coach and advisor while earning a Master of Arts in Teaching. In the “Learn While You Earn” model, students who are employed by our partner schools (mostly located in New England but other locations are possible) automatically receive an Emerging Leader Scholarship of $5000 and may receive additional financial support from the partner school. Partner schools also provide free room and board.
