Trail Stewardship Team Crew Leader

The Trail Stewardship Team Crew Leaders will perform administrative and limited supervisory duties in directing day-to-day activities of Trail Stewardship Team Crew Members performing trail maintenance and construction for the Open Space Division. 


 About the Trail Stewardship Team:  

The Trails Stewardship Team (TST) of Jeffco Open Space is a fun program that employs youth for trail maintenance and natural resource restoration of parks. TST promotes a positive work and stewardship ethic among team members while helping to maintain and improve natural surface trails, mitigate noxious weeds, and restore natural areas. TST will employ 80 youth this summer, placed into crews of 10 members, supervised by an adult Crew Leader. Join over 3,000 TST alumni for a program that has been happening since 1975!


There are eight non-benefited temporary positions available. Individuals will work four 10-hour days per week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:00AM – 5:00PM.  

The Crew Lead Position has a projected start date of April 18, 2024. 

Working dates are listed below:  

Interview Training:  April 18 (Thursday) 6-8PM 
 

Conduct Crew Member Interviews: April 20 and April 27 (Saturdays) 7:00AM – 5:00PM 

 
Crew Leader In-Field Training  
June 3 – June 13; Mon – Thurs; 7:00AM – 5:00PM  

Program Dates:  
June 19 – August 3 Mon-Thurs; 7:00AM – 5:00PM  
 
 
Please note the anticipated hiring range for this role is: $19.00 - $20.00 USD hourly 
Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills.  

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 

  • Supervision of trail work performed by a crew consisting of 8-12 youth aged 14-18 years old.   
  • Ensure that safety policies and procedures are communicated and adhered to in order to achieve compliance with established standards.  
  • Work will involve walking up to 7 miles a day in extreme weather carrying tools and personal equipment.
  • Document attendance, payroll, and work completion reports of crew daily.
  • Drive a 14-passenger van.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS  

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with additional course work in Natural Resource Management, Outdoor Recreation, Park Maintenance or related field preferred and 
  • Minimum of one year of experience in youth supervision and/or trail maintenance/construction preferred.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • A passion for positive youth development.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment, including trucks, 14-passenger vans, and basic trail tools.    
  • Requires ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Additional Job Description

  • Requires a valid Colorado driver's license. If you possess an out of state license, you must obtain a valid Colorado Driver's License within 30 days of your hire date.
