Summer Camp Counselor

DESCRIPTION

The Montshire Museum of Science is renowned throughout the region for its summer camp experience. We are currently seeking our next cohort of Camp Counselors to help develop and lead camp programs for the 2024 season. Camp sessions will be open for those entering grades 1-6 in the fall. Montshire educators will provide support throughout the summer with pre-camp orientation and training, daily check-ins, and feedback throughout the day. 

Dates: June 17, 2024 – August 16, 2024 

Hours: M-F, 8am–4 pm (regular), or 9am–5pm (extended care), Staff meeting Wed., 4-5 pm 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work in teams with up to 18 campers per session 
  • Participate in pre-camp preparation and training with Montshire Education Staff. 
  • Facilitate daily science and nature experiences. 
  • Lead games, solo times, and large or small group activities. 
  • Ensure appropriate physical, social, and emotional needs of individual campers are met, and risks inherent in programming are well-managed. 
  • Communicate with parents/guardians. 
  • Manage campers in one–to-one situations if need to separate from the group. 
  • Work in teams, and as an individual, to lead summer camp sessions 
  • Manage camper behavior with emphasis on positive behavior reinforcement 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 

  • Passion for science and nature education, and excitement for exploring the natural or engineered world with children. 
  • Background in science, education, and/or environmental education strongly preferred. 
  • Experience working with, care-taking, and/or supervising children ages 6-12. 
  • CPR and First Aid certification. (Training will be provided by Montshire). 
  • Must work well in both an individual and team setting. 
  • Flexible thinking and ability to adjust expectations as needed. 
  • Able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds and to navigate outdoor landscape and hiking trails. 
  • All Montshire employees are subject to a criminal background check. 
  • Montshire Museum of Science requires that all employees and volunteers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

 

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

Counselors work in teams to provide programmatic structure and care for campers. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Congenial and fast-paced indoor and outdoor summer camp environment. 
  • Full days of facilitating great summer camp experiences indoors and outdoors. 
  • Physically demanding work in a variety of weather conditions. 
  • Navigating hiking trails, sometimes in wet conditions. 

 

TIME COMMITMENT 

Camp Counselor positions are full-time, temporary, 5 days per week(M-F), and up to 40 hours per week from approximately June 17 through August 16, 2024 

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS 

  • Hourly position at $16.50 per hour. 
  • No Montshire Benefits.
