JOB DESCRIPTION – Summer Land Steward

Background: The Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is a regional community-based nonprofit organization founded in 1984 and incorporated as an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization in 1985.

TILT’s mission is to conserve the natural beauty, diverse wildlife habitats, water quality and outdoor recreation opportunities of the Thousand Islands region, for present and future generations. 

Since 1984, TILT has helped lead land conservation efforts in the Thousand Islands. Today, TILT protects over 13,000 acres of sensitive habitat, which supports the overall health of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem.

Job Description: The Summer Land Steward assists TILT staff to better serve its mission. During summer months, TILT expands its property management on Signature Preserves, conservation easements, and recreational facilities and trails.

As a Summer Land Steward, you will play a vital role in ensuring the upkeep and maintenance of TILT's preserve lands, trails, and buildings. This position involves a range of responsibilities, including trail maintenance, land management, and general tasks. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and passionate about environmental conservation.

The Summer Land Steward of the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) is an hourly, seasonal paid position that reports to the Stewardship Director. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Primary Responsibilities

Stewardship/Preserve Maintenance

  • Perform daily preserve maintenance including mowing, weed-eating, and trash removal
  • Assist TILT staff with trail maintenance including the construction of foot bridges, drainage systems, and new trails
  • Maintain tools and equipment in accordance with established procedures
  • Assist staff with monitoring conservation easement and preserve boundary marking

Volunteer and Event Support

  • Assist with all aspects of summer fundraising and community outreach events
  • Engage with and work alongside TILT stewardship/event volunteers
  • Assist with all aspects of summer education programs

  • Interest in conservation and land management
  • Interest in the ecology of the Thousand Islands region and St. Lawrence River
  • Ability to comfortably operate power tools and lawn maintenance equipment
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and a good driving record

Working Conditions

The Summer Land Steward will work outdoors and participate in trail walks and trail maintenance. Activities will occur on varied terrain and in variable weather conditions. Knowledge of the St. Lawrence River and boating experience is a plus.

Dates, hours, and compensation

The Summer Land Steward will work approximately 35-40 hours a week for 12 weeks between May and August. Exact start and end dates are flexible. Some weekend and evening hours are required. Some local travel is required. Pay starts at $15.50/hr.
